What you'll do

We’ll meet up in Asakasa where we’ll learn about the area’s history and importance before following the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Asia’s first subway line, to Okachimachi. Along the way, we’ll pass Sensoji Temple, Kappabashi, Ueno, Shinobazu Pond, and the Ameya-yokocho Market while learning about the development of Edo into the great city of Tokyo.

Learn more about David

David

Since moving to Japan over seven years ago, I have been fascinated with uncovering pieces of old Tokyo that have survived its incredible transition into a global megacity. Most people can’t imagine what the city must have looked like a hundred years ago, but if you look very closely, there are reminders everywhere. Interested in history, photography, and architecture, I’m looking forward to giving you more insight into and helping you make the most out of the city I now call home.

Where you'll be

We’ll follow the development of Tokyo from the castle town of Edo into the biggest city in the world through the story of the development of its first underground railway from the entertainment district of Asakusa to Ueno. Along the way, we’ll uncover pieces of old Tokyo embedded into the modern fabric of the city, as well as learn about the history of the neighborhoods and how they got their names.
