What you'll do

This is a beginners class in which you will learn the basics of copper foil technique and go home with your own stained glass suncatcher you made yourself! The workshop includes basic instruction on how to design and structure your piece, create a pattern and template, cut glass, use a diamond grinder, apply and burnish copper foil, assemble and solder the pieces together and add a hook to properly hang your completed piece.

You may bring your own design for a suncatcher or I will help you choose from existing templates or create your own based on your skill level and the sake of time and stability of your piece. You will also get to select from a large selection of glass of all colors to make your piece, which many consider the best part of the experience.

Copper foil is a great introduction to the art of stained glass, and in attending this workshop you will also learn about the more advanced technique of traditional leaded glass, the differences between the two techniques, and the advantages and disadvantages to each.

Proper safety precautions will be taught alongside each step and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided along with all materials. Masks are required for all students and hand sanitizer will be provided upon entry.

I own and operate a stained glass and gold leaf studio in which I create custom stained glass and gilded art for homes and businesses in the local community. I was first trained in the art of stained glass while becoming certified for Historic Preservation and Restoration, then went on to work in a professional stained glass studio in Brooklyn before moving to the Hudson Valley to apply my skills towards opening a studio of my own. I originally went to college in the area years earlier, so I have witnessed much change and growth in the Hudson Valley over the past two decades. One of my favorite aspects of my business is holding monthly workshops teaching the basics of stained glass. It gives me great pleasure to bring traditional artisan techniques into the modern world and allow people the opportunity to try out such a bygone craft.

Where you'll be

I conduct this workshop in my stained glass and gold leaf studio located in a barn in the woods of the Rondout Valley, just off the beautiful O&W rail trail. My studio is filled with my own work as well as antique stained glass pieces and panels I am in the midst of repairing, so there is a lot to look at.

What a unique experience! We looked for a hands-on arts experience and Brenna absolutely delivered! There was a wide variety of styles and difficulty levels to choose from. Brenna helped us each step of the way, and ensured we left with designs we could be proud of!
