What you'll do

This excursion takes place under the midnight sun during the summer season. The midnight sun is visible from the 18th of May to the 25th of July, but the nights are bright all through May and August as well.

We start the hike with the pickup by the Arctic Cathedral in Tromsdalen - on the mainland side of Tromsø. We head for the cable car that is situated only a 15 min walk from where we meet.

On this summer hike, we walk up one of the paths leading to the Storsteinen mountain at 420m. Here we have a small break and enjoy the view before we head towards the Fløya mountain at 670m. The last leg is about 1,5km in rocky terrain. On top, we stay for a while, we have a snack, put on a dry layer and enjoy an even better view than before.

We head back down the sherpa stairs on the north side of the mountain and head back to the church where the excursion ends.

I am a native Norwegian from Tromso that is now working as an expedition leader along the Norwegian coast with Hurtigruten. I have a formal guiding education from the north of Norway and Svalbard and have spent a lot of my spare time outdoors with the kids and by myself.

Over the last 10 years, I have been doing nature- and northern lights photography, and is now teaching my guests how to get the most out of their camera gear. When not traveling the coast I am also running a small guiding company focusing on slow adventure excursions with small groups in the Tromso area - both by car with longer stops and hiking if the weather permits it. With roughly 30 years of experience in the arctic, I give guests experiences in nature they are not likely to forget.

Where you'll be

Our main stops are the cable car top station, Storsteinen. From here we head up to Steinbøhytta - a stone cabin from 1907. We continue up to the Fløya mountain at 670m, and our endpoint is by the Pomor "flag" at the top. We head down from the Fløya mountain the same way we came up and continue our descent by the sherpa stairs built in 2018/19.
