What you'll do
We would love to host a tour of our farm for those interested in learning how to start a small farm, keep honeybees, and raise alpacas/sheep for fiber. Specifically, we will share our expertise on starting and running a small diversified, ecologically friendly farm. Our areas of speciality include: beekeeping, wool and yarn, tree grafting, fruit orchard management, and u-pick and community-shared agriculture. We're also expert succulent growers.
The tour will be offered on Saturday morning from 10-12pm and will feature a honey tasting from our own award winning honeybee hives and a tour of the sheep and alpacas, honeybee hives, succulent greenhouse, vegetable and flower beds, and blueberry fields. Our honey has won the 'Good Food' awards three times in the last five years for the best honey in the United States.
We begin with a visit to our honeybee hives and succulent greenhouse, before returning to the barn for a honey tasting. After sampling our honey and answering questions about beekeeping, we will visit the alpacas and sheep. We will share about making yarn from wool fibers and natural dye. Finally, we will tour the vegetable beds and chicken coops, and then finish in the blueberry fields.
We will have lots of time for FAQs about any part of our farm including about keeping bees or animals, yarn and fiber, succulents and fruit trees, and building on barren land.
Other things to note
Please wear footwear appropriate for walking in a farm. Check the weather forecast on the day of and consider bringing a sunhat or parasol if desired. We will be in the direct sun for most of your visit. We will have a porto-potty onsite and water and tea. Parking is easy and the walking is flat.

Hello! We're Greg and Vail and we've run The Croft Farm on Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon for 10 years. We created our small, diverse farm after buying a barren field and developing it to be an abundant and ecologically-friendly space. This includes building our house, small cottage, and barn. Plus raising our own hoop-house.
We have mostly rescued our various nonhuman animals - which include a flock of sheep, alpacas , rabbits, chickens, ducks, goats, and blind holstein cow. We also keep honeybees for pollination and honey, manage four acres of blueberries and 50+ fruit trees, and grow lots of vegetables. More recently, Greg has started grafting and propagating cider trees and succulents.
We love design, nonhuman animals, living gently on the land, and planting loads of seeds. We have developed expertises we'd love to share!

We begin in our large barn with a brief introduction to the farm and each other. Next we visit our honeybee hives and spend about 15-20 minutes at the hives. Before returning to the barn for a honey tasting, we will swing by our succulent hoop-house for a brief look. After the honey tasting, we will visit the alpacas, sheep, goats, and blind cow. You're welcome to feed the animals. We finish at the chicken/duck coop, orchards, and blueberries.

It was so much fun and educational! There’s definitely a lot of work that goes into building and taking care of a farm but after going to The Croft Farm, I think it’s worth it! I wish there was more experiences like this so the public can have more hands on knowledge about everyday food process and produce they buy that come from animals/farm! Also Greg went over the does and don’ts when creating your own farm that can thrive with many different ideas attached! I will definitely visit the farm again!

The Croft farm has so much to offer their visitors! From their ducks, chickens, rabbit (XL), alpacas, and sweet cow, this place is the perfect way to spend an afternoon and get a taste of life on the farm. Nellie the cow was my personal favorite part, she is so sweet! Feeding the sheep was an absolute highlight as well! We had a great time, I would recommend this place!

So much fun! Greg led us through a awesome tour of their farm and gave so much insight to the work they do. Their farm is not that far from the city, making it the perfect experience while not having to drive outside of the city.
Greg was really cool and easy going. He let me hold a chicken which was rad. My favorites were the alpacas, but all of it was a solid experience. Perfect for families, friends or even solo. They also did a great job at adhering to social distance guidelines. 10/10.

Greg & Vail have a wonderful farm with a variety of animals. We loved the personal experience of feeding the chicken, alpacas, and sheep. It was fascinating to learn about the bees and life on a farm. It was a terrific way to spend 2hours in Portland. We highly recommend this tour and hope to be back in the summer to pick blueberries! Thank you, Greg & Vail!

Such a great couple (although we only met 1/2) and great cause. Convenient location to Portland at the tip of the island. Greg did a great job explaining the history of the farm, the revenue streams of the farm, and interesting information about each aspect of the farm (sheep, bees, berries, succulents, produce, etc.). We really enjoyed hearing about the collaborations they have with other locals for different services (running a u-pick, beekeeping, hay, etc.). The alpacas, sheep, and fowl were all very sweet and fun and adorable! They each have great stories about how they arrived at the farm from other not ideal circumstances. They emulate a local, sustainable, ethical business. Fabulous experience! ❤️
