What you'll do

Travel to the Iron Bridge in style with your own Blue Badge Guide. Appreciate the elegance of this famous World Heritage Site, the cradle of the Industrial Revolution set in a dramatic gorge along the banks of the River Severn.
I will meet you in central Oxford where I will give you a brief introduction to some of the University’s fine buildings, its history and famous alumni, before we board the minibus for the 2-hour ride to Shropshire. We begin the tour of the Iron Bridge area with a visit to the ruined priory at Much Wenlock to show you the character of the area before industry arrived. We then cross the River Severn and follow the north bank to the village of Ironbridge, where we spend half an hour visiting the fascinating Museum of the Gorge. Parking near the iconic Iron Bridge itself we have a 20-min tour on and around this amazing structure, whose span was high enough to allow masted barges to pass underneath. After lunch we drive to nearby Coalbrookdale, and have a look at the Old Furnace, the first blast furnace to use coke instead of coal (1709), a development that sparked the Industrial Revolution.
At 3pm we head for Blists Hill Victorian Town, whose myriad attractions include a Severn trow and a replica of Richard Trevithick’s 1802 locomotive. Return via the Shropshire Hills.
Other things to note
Food and entry to paid attractions are not included in the price of the tour. Ironbridge approx. £26.00 per person; Wenlock Priory £6.00

Based in the beautiful city of Oxford, where I have lived for almost 30 years, I am a Blue Badge Guide for the Heart of England, a region that covers some of the most iconic destinations in the country. The Blue Badge is the UK’s highest guiding qualification. Whilst my training is thorough, my job is also about passion. I enjoy telling my guests about every aspect of a place, its history, architecture, personalities, art, geography; I love the great outdoors, and am just as much at home with industrial heritage as ancient stone circles.
I am a licensed driver-guide with my own minibus, operating from Oxford to destinations all over the region and beyond. I am also a descendant of the Banbury Gullivers, whose graves in St Mary’s churchyard, Banbury, inspired Jonathan Swift to a name for his famous protagonist.
