Authentic local food tour

黄浦区, China

Experience hosted by Jian (Jim)

  1. 3 hours
  2. Hosted in English and Chinese (Simplified)

What you'll do

We'll walk around the former French concession, from the old neighborhood to the modern streets. We'll walk by the birthplace of the Chinese Communist Party and learn about the history and culture of the quickly changing city. Then we'll stop at the first restaurant in the Xintiandi area and start with scallion oil noodles with three to six different toppings. You'll discover Shanghai's food culture by walking through the backyards of traditional stone-gate houses (Shikumeng), which soon will be demolished due to ongoing urban renewal projects. Relax with some Chinese tea such as pu'er, oolong, and longjing green tea away from the touristic crowded central CBD. In the middle of the tour, we'll visit a local microbrewery and sample some IPAs, pale ales, stouts, or pilsners. Meanwhile, you'll discover the Chinese drinking culture by sampling a shot of one of the most widely consumed spirits in the world: baijiu. The last place is a kind of hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop joint that serves wontons, pan-fired dumplings, soup dumplings, and other side dishes. Our walk will end close to the People Square.

As a native of Shanghai, I am passionate about introducing my city to people who are curious about Shanghai’s authentic local cuisine. I'm also running a culinary tour company and planning to open a restaurant.

My co-host Lu is a big craft beer geek and a musician playing at former French Concession at night. He's originated from Shangri-La and lives in Shanghai for almost 10 years.

Other experiences we offer:
Authentic tea and dessert tour;
Chinese craft beer tour.

Such a wonderful day touring around the city and getting to see a little history and a lot of great food! Jim was even able to customize our tour by making it all vegetarian for us! Terrific experience! Will go again!

If you are looking to experience real local Shanghai cuisine, look no further than Jian's tour. Being a born and bread local, Jian's knowledge of the Shanghai food scene was deep and passionate. The food and drink stops were a blending real old-school local food and drink spots with some of the new and exciting eating locations in the area. I came expecting a nice food tour of Shanghai and left feeling like I really connected with the city and Jian himself. Whether you're young or old, outgoing or reserved, Jim's tour will leave you wishing it went longer. I can't recommend it enough and the next time I come back to Shanghai, I will definitely go out for another tour, perhaps at a different meal time.

We absolutely loved our Airbnb Shanghai foodie tour. We got to experience small hole-in-the-wall restaurants that we would normally be too intimidated to try. The food was absolutely excellent. We tried so many different things and in addition, we learned a lot about the local history. Our guide, Jim, seem to know everybody in the area and he was very charismatic. He is very passionate about Shanghai and China. In addition to our culinary adventures, we walked down old Shanghai lanes that we normally would not have access to. It was a wonderful night of fun, food, history and adventure and I personally cannot recommend it enough. We learned about new trends and disappearing local culture. I would like to add that our host was just excellent with children.

Bon appetite!

We had a fun, informative and filling afternoon with Jim, wandering the Old Shanghai and discovering real hidden gems. Jim’s tour was recommended to me by a friend and I will in turn be recommending his tour to all visitors and newcomers to Shanghai.
