What you'll do

*If you prefer any dates other than the dates available on the calendar, please send me a message.

I will welcome you at JR Higashi-Omiya station and take you to an art studio in a Japanese-style tatami room. I will serve you a cup of tea and little crackers or sweets.

With a video presentation, I'll give a lecture on the art materials, art history, basic techniques of Sumie / Suibokuga / Japanese Ink Wash Painting.

Then I'll teach you the authentic techniques of Sumie and you'll paint an eggplant and a pine tree - a lucky motif in Japan.
If you would like to paint other motifs, please let me know in advance. If you join my class more than once, I will prepare different motifs each time.

I'll also teach you how to write your name in Japanese, so you can sign on your artwork.

I would love to share information about art supply shops and interesting museums in Tokyo.

Around the studio and on the way to the station, there are Ramen, Yakiniku and Sushi restaurants and cafes.

Near JR Toro station (one station before Higashi-omiya), there is a famous Bonsai village with many Bonsai gardens as well as Bonsai Museum.

Near JR Omiya station (two stations before Higashi-omiya), there is a large traditional shrine called Hikawa-jinja where you would enjoy strolling and feel the sacred atmosphere.

Thank you.
Other things to note

My passion is to spread the love for Japanese art. I studied art history in Tokyo and London 20 years ago. I was enchanted with a 14th-century Zen monk painter, and began training under a master. I have collaborated with fashion brands, had solo shows in Germany and the United States, and performed on stages. My Sumi-e class was featured in a magazine and I appeared on TV as an art commentator. https://www.tamayosamejima.com/ Instagram @tamayoatlier

Tamayo-san did an excellent job explaining the complexities of Sumie, while also highlighting how simple it is to produce beautiful pieces of work with gradiation and 三墨法/3 tones and much more.

This ink painting experience with Tamayo was not only unforgettable but really inspirational. Tamayo is a true artist and a historian of the traditional and contemporary techniques of sumi-e. She offers a hands-on demonstration and help as you navigate the materials and application of the medium. With Tamayo, you will discover new appreciation for ink painting and hopefully a new hobby!

Tamayo was very very accommodating, even though the place is a bit far from Tokyo city, she really help and guide us to not get lost. Hehe.. even though we are late she is very accommodating and understanding. We really learn a lot about Japanese painting and we even got a bonus to write our name in Japanese. It was such a fun filled experience for the whole family

First of all, Tamayo is a great teacher with tons of patience. She would help you anytime and she’s very understanding. The class itself was very interesting l, and the painting part was a real fun. I don’t have any skills in painting at all but after that - I can say that I’ve made some progress in the subject(: The bottom line- you should take the opportunity and don’t miss it 😊
