What you'll do

Enjoy a classic J-Tree hiking adventure, learn more about the science behind the scenery. This experience provides an illuminating overview of JTNP's bedrock geology, soil ecology, native plants, and wildlife.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a life-long fan of Joshua Tree you will learn to read the land as never before, coming away with a newfound appreciation for some of the most ancient plants in the national park system and the intricate web of life that sustains them.

Traveling in a small group, practicing Leave No Trace wilderness ethics, we will respectfully visit uncrowded areas gaining new insights into the life cycle of Joshua trees, cryptobiotic soils, seasonal wildflowers, tortoise conservation biology and the migration patterns of bighorn sheep. Our experience will also highlight the importance of human ecology, the symbolic value of wilderness and the healing qualities of nature.
Other things to note
For optimal enjoyment, be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Hat & sunglasses are also recommended. Desert weather is variable. Dress in layers.

I'm an ardent admirer of the natural world with a specialization in desert ecology. I've been climbing, camping and exploring JTNP and the surrounding wilderness areas for 30+ years.

I support the NPS Science and Resource Stewardship Division as a Volunteer In Park, monitoring desert plants for the Joshua Tree Climate Change Collaborative.

I launched the Ecological Solutions Stewardship Initiative as a way of sharing my love for the exquisite desert biome. Please check my reviews: I offer a transcendent experience, cultivating a deeper appreciation and profound connection to the land.

Where you'll be

We'll start out by hiking to the top of a granite monolith which offers an amazing overview of the surrounding desert. This is an excellent vantage point to study the park's world-famous geologic features.

Next, we'll follow the California Hiking and Riding Trail to a Juniper woodland populated with Joshua trees and living soil. Amidst this thriving biotic community it's easy to see why every footstep counts.

Mark is obviously passionate about this part of the desert. My daughter and I were pleasantly surprised in regards to just how much we enjoyed our ecology tour with Mark,-especially because the temperature was on the triple digits on the day we booked. Without going into any detail because it would take too long - let me just say that I cannot say enough good things about his tour and would highly recommend booking a morning with Mark at the beginning of your stay in Joshua Tree as it will greatly enhance your visit. Would highly recommend to all of my friends.

Mark is super professional and passionate. I’n glad to have him as my guide. There are many inconspicuous plants, rocks and animals in the park. I absolutely would not even notice them and realize their importance to the entire Joshua tree habitat if Mark wasn’t there pointing them out. The rock climbing was the highlight of my trip to Joshua. It feels surreal to touch and standing on top of theses million years old rock that once was the sea bed. I’m so disappointed that my trip ends today. Hope Mark will take me and my friends to encounter big horns next time!
