What you'll do

Our session starts with an introduction and tour of our bamboo house, freshly made jamu and delightful Balinese snacks. We will go over a site safety induction followed by a demonstration of tools and safety. Firstly we will make our spoon/spork and after looking at some examples, you can choose whether to work from a cutlery template or design your own piece from scratch. We will be using hand-crafting / manual tools and learning techniques to carve bamboo and create curvature to fashion and hone our designs. Then we will use some mechanical technology to ‘speed up the process’ and smooth our pieces while learning about the grain of the bamboo.

Next we will make a bamboo cup - choosing our size and using a hand saw and manual tools to take off the skin and refine the lip of our cups - making them nice to drink from. We can use a sanding machine to finish the pieces and lastly we will apply a food-safe finishing coating/oil to seal our creations.

At the end of the workshop, you will have your own unique piece of ultralight cutlery that can travel anywhere with you and a reusable cup to save your carbon footprint when you order take-away! And a knowledge and appreciation for the nature of bamboo as a material to work with

We are an all-abilities inclusive community space. Please let us know of any special needs requirements in the messages section. Mobile Class available

I am Australian mother building an inclusive disability community project for my 19 year old daughter and other children with special needs in Bali. I am passionate about natural building and design, experimentation, raising awareness and sharing skills that can make building bamboo homes sustainable, affordable and accessible. I have been learning about bamboo craft and construction for the last four years through this building project - a bamboo house in the urban jungle of Denpasar - for my daughter to be enabled to have more inclusion and connection with community and creative souls, and empower our local community.

We had such a great experience at the workshop. Natalie is an amazing person with such big passion about environmental. She and her group were really helpful in teaching us the very basic of the cutlery making.
