What you'll do

This is a fun and adventurous exploration of the countryside and coastline of Purbeck. It is made all the more exciting by venturing forth after dark though no need to be afraid as this adventure makes being out at night fun and enjoyable.
Our adventure starts in the quaint village of Worth Matravers but we are soon heading off the beaten track via the ancient Priests Way. I can take you to a quarry where a series of amazing dinosaur footprint fossils can be seen by torchlight (or moonlight!); at night we can imagine that the dinosaurs are still lurking in the shadows before we discover the secretive Seacombe Valley.
This valley is a real wildlife haven and depending on the time of year we can often spot deer, foxes, badgers, bats and even glow worms. To help us spot the wildlife we will play some great listening, watching and silent walking games.
Finally we reach the sea and explore the deserted quarries at Seacombe Cove, a past haunt of smugglers and still inhabited by the ghosts of shipwrecked sailors.
If we are lucky and the sky is clear of clouds then the stargazing is amazing as we are miles from any street lights and light pollution.
From here we retrace our steps up part of the valley before the final steep hill back to our starting point in the village.

Hello! I am Barry Cullimore and I have lived on and taught about the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site for the past 24 years. I am a qualified teacher and outdoor education professional with a degree in Geology and Geography. I hold the UK Summer Mountain Leader Award and am trained in outdoor first aid.

I have walked and run along the full 93 miles of the World Heritage Site on numerous occasions (sometimes at night!); in my opinion it is the most beautiful part of coastline in the UK. I am a keen fossil hunter, bird watcher and botanist and know facts and amazing stories about all the places, plants, animals, rocks and fossils that can be found along the coast.

I can help you get the most from your time in Dorset and look forward to joining you in exploring the Jurassic Coast soon.

We had a great walk with Barry, the wind was wild but we were in very safe hands, our boys (5&7) kept up with the pace and loved the adventure. Definitely worth it for anyone looking to get out into nature and exploring the fascinating Dorset coastline.

What a fabulous experience. It rained all day but stopped 2 hours before we started. Clouds parted and we were treated to a wonderful bright moonlit night. Barry met us in the car park and we were soon wondering through the countryside into the dark. Barry had head torches but we didn't really need them as the moon was so bright. Barry was informative and engaging, very friendly and knowledgeable. We learnt about the stars, local history, geology, and wildlife, both contemporary and from 125 million years ago! Highlights were the moonlight shimmering on the sea from our clifftop vantage point and providing my daughters with a lasting memory of me sliding on my knees down a very muddy slope. Barry was very engaging with the kids, even my 13 year old warmed up half way through and that's quite an achievement. I would thoroughly recommend this experience for all townies looking for some adventure and anyone at all interested in nature and local history. Highly enjoyable and heartfelt thanks to Barry for being a great guide.

Barry was super friendly and patient as we had three children with us stopped quite a lot to catch bugs and ask questions. The walk was magical and you are guaranteed to see fossils and wildlife and if you are lucky, bats and a gloworm or two! Barry adjusted our route to our group's capability.

A magical experience for all the family in a beautiful location. Barry really engaged the children with wonderful stories of the local area and characters, and games to keep them silent for wildlife spotting. If only we could book Barry to guide us throughout the UK!
