What you'll do

We will meet in Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo at the small Fossil & Prehistory Museum, about a half hour ride from Verona. This is the ideal place to learn about the nature and origins of Valpolicella valleys, and Lessini mountains, admire the wonderful fossils dating from the times these mountains were the bottom of a large sea. We will see how the natural environment shaped human societies since pre-historic times, and how early human population survived.

Next, we will visit the Ponte di Veija, the largest natural bridge in Europe of spectacular beauty. Here we can visit some of the sites and caves we learned about in the museum. We know the Italian poet Dante Alighieri visited this natural bridge in the 13th century, as well as the German poet Wolfgang Goethe in the 19th century.

Finally, we will go to the locally famous shop of Corrado Benedetti in Giare, a bit down the road. Here we will taste their aged cheeses, meat, and sausages, all which are all locally sourced, and learn about their natural production processes. They serve wines from various cellars, and will advice on the best food/wine combinations.

Optional: After the tour, there will be an opportunity for to have lunch in nearby local restaurants, which specialize in local dishes and game meat (kid, vennison, rabbit depending on the season).

I am an experienced and independent tour guide, always mindful of the visitors' best interest, and adding value by offering many useful tips for further exploring Verona province, and its wonderful countryside.

Since 1990 enjoy living in the Verona & Valpolicella area. With a doctorate in Italian history, I offer solid expertise. Listening to the stories of my Italian family since childhood, I absorbed a lot of special local knowledge.

These Valpolicella experiences grew out of course I gave in 2019 on the history of the Veneto region from prehistoric times until the 20th century.

I am passionate about sharing my knowledge of the rich culture of the Valpolicella region, which always has been at the crossroads of civilizations. I will make sure this will be a fantastic learning experience for you, while tasting local wines and food.

Neighbouring Val d'Illasi is home to the only German speaking minority in Verona province. Giare (Benedetti's shop) and the Ponte di Veija are located 10 min. down the road to Verona at 800 m. altitude

This experience with Albert was amazing. We had simply the best time. Albert met us and kept our interest throughout with his extensive knowledge of the local area and history. He was kind enough to collect us from the centre of Verona for a separate fee and showed us a number of unique landmarks around the Valpolicello region. The trip was well worth the cost and we saw things we could not have seen on our own. The highlight was the local meat, cheese and wine tasting at an amazing local produce supplier who was also passionate about his subject. Albert was captivating and spoke excellent English. He puts a lot of effort in behind the scenes to make sure you have a superb experience.
