I have been doing unofficial community building since 2000, and official nonprofit work since 2006.

I have studied Peace and Justice in divided communities with a degree in philosophy. I have several certificates and training in a variety of community topics, including food Justice, poverty, and community gardening using natural Earth systems.

I started my first community garden in 2006 and have sense start over a dozen community gardens in the state of Utah. In 2013, I started getting into creating neighborhood centers in divided communities, by using old dilapidated buildings.

I have worked for several large nonprofit organization, both national and international. I am currently a director for a couple local nonprofit organizations.

Where you'll be

We will meet on the grounds of this old and historic church. A short history of the church will be given, as well as the stories that have taken place ... both good and bad.

After the history, you will have about 20 minutes to explore the church. Bring a light and dress warm. The spirits like it dark and cold.

My wife has an interest in the paranormal. We haven’t really experienced anything before and thought this activity would be fun. We first toured the church by ourselves. We didn’t have anything unusual happen. We talked to the person helping us that night and they offered to go through again with us and play some music. We were in the chapel playing music for about 10 mins and then all of a sudden we heard some crazy loud screeching noises coming from the rafters. We could tell this was 100% real and not fabricated. It was a once in a lifetime experience for us. Still have no idea what it was. We actually recorded it and the video is on YouTube - search “Abandoned church night tour in SLC, UT New Hope Community Center”. What was that screeching noise? Before arriving to the location, we were terrified about what we were going to experience. Myself and another friend weren’t too sure about going in the church, but another friend was willing to look around the building. David was so good about talking through why we were scared and trying to make the tour as personalized as we needed. He even got another person on the property to take our brave friend on a tour while David took me and my friend around the property and informed us about his mission and passion for what he was doing in the community. We probably should have listened to the scary stories about the building, but we ran out of town as we were traveling early the next morning! I definitely recommend experiencing this tour!

My boyfriend is skeptical of ghosts, I'm a believer. I grew up in a haunted house so I'm very sensitive to vibes (energy), and have seen my share of stuff in the past. This ghost hunt location was so spooky!! Right when we entered we turned left into the first room. I was spooked already but my boyfriend works in construction and had a huge flashlight. He and I were leaving that room discussing how buildings were constructed back in the early 20th century, specifically the heating unit being on the ceiling, when his flashlight died out of nowhere. I yell, "Are you f**king sh*tting me right now?!" At my bf who looks like he's going to shit himself out of fear. Suddenly it was just me with the headlamp Dave gave me. Immediately the vibes changed. It took me a few minutes to be brave enough to continue forward. The energy remained pretty tense the whole time after that. At one point I was turning around in a room to leave when I saw a chair covered in a drape across the hall and I jumped and screamed. I couldn't even get near the 2 Sunday school rooms until the end of the hunt. Heading up to the chapel my bf started acting more nervous - a man who up until this point has been making fun of it. He wouldn't tell me until later but right before he stepped into the chapel he heard a woman scream bloody murder twice. And it sounded like it was coming from the entrance area where his flashlight died! He had tried to ignore it cuz he's skeptical, but later when we were debriefing our experiences he would share with me how scared he got from this point froward. We enter the chapel and something is just nagging at me - don't go to the back, don't go under the chore landing. I keep looking back there cuz I can feel it - something is back there. We end up going up to the chore landing because this is as much a tour of old historical building as it is ghost hunt, and I want to see it all. My bf walked up there, then immediately started heading back down - he was super uncomfortable - to the point where he grabbed me and pulled me out of there. As we're walking down the stairs, I see a pure white full human silhouette. It's not radiating light or anything, it just is white. And its underneath the chore landing in the area I don't feel I can enter. I blink and it's gone. I choose not to think about it, but at one point my bf and I turn off our lights and sit quietly in the darkness - I could feel something over my shoulder coming from that area. When we turn on our lights after a minute, I immediately check that area - nothing. As we leave the chapel I start to feel a little lighter until we try to enter the 2 Sunday school rooms. So much energy was coming from that area. My bf broke the barrier first, I rushed behind him. The room in the back with burn marks on the floor surprised me, it looked like kneeling marks - I didn't feel good there so we moved on. My bf wouldn't tell me until later but the whole downstairs felt super scary after he heard the screams - he wasn't too excited to go back to the entrance but that was our only way out. He felt followed/watched perpetuately, a feeling that didn't go away until we left. Dave and Hummingbird were so kind and thoughtful, they even gave us a one-on-one tour of some special spots and told us about there experiences. Super cool, super legit!

A wonderful chance to get a view into a different community and realm. David conveyed all the history of the old ward church and made the experience very personalized. What he and his group are doing is really admirable and this was a fun unique opportunity. I'd do it again!
