About the organization: Alpha Institute

The Alpha Institute, formerly Alpha Boys School, has provided educational and social services to at-risk youth for almost 150 years. The music program is where some of Jamaica's most accomplished musicians got their start, from jazz to ska to reggae. According to the Telegraph in the UK, Alpha "helped release the spirit of one of the most musical islands in the world."

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Alpha Institute.

Where you'll be

We’ll walk the grounds of the school campus, visit each of the current trade schools, and spend most of our time in Alpha's music department, where the music is learned and made today.

It’s more about to know the Alpha institute and how they are doing a great work of resistance in support Jamaican young. I really loved to be there, mainly if you already know some history of the famous musicians who studied there. I was very welcome by them and also the jam session was great. I recommend this experience

Very interesting experience. I didn't know anything about Alpha Institute actually, I choose this experience mostly for the music. The first part is a visit of the Institute, where you can meet some students and you'll be explained the purpose of the Institute and the action they develope to help those children. Well, I wouldn't imagine it would be that interesting. I definitely admire their work. The second part gives you the opportunity to play with some students. Great experience. Recommended.

I had an amazing time on this experience. I enjoyed learning the history of the school and how music has helped to shape it's students and how their experiences at Alpha have shaped Jamaican music in return. Seeing the different crafts the students learn was wonderful, especially the wood working shop. The final jam with the band was amazing. The musicians have played with some big names in Jamaican music and were so friendly and made the experience even more memorable. Would do it again tomorrow and highly recommend. I look forward to seeing Alpha grow even more in the future.

Such a cool encounter! I had little or no musical experience but got to jam with some of Jamaica's best musicians. They took the time to teach the basics and made me feel part of the band! Can't recommend highly enough!!!

¡Increíble! Sooooo much fun. It was really a trip into the heart of Jamaican music. The vibes at Alpha Institute were very unique: the students, teachers and the different trades: woodwork, screen printing, landscaping...we could see a lively institution really moving forward and cutting edge... these nons are really unique... but the best was the Jamming session... or more than jamming!!!!! We could learn the basic riddims of Jamaican music from mento, ska, rocksteady and reggae. The secrets of ska upbeats and reggae offbeats, the slowing down of rocksteady... but the cool part is that we were playing together... me with the pandereta??? yaman! I was part of a reggae band for once! Two students were very attentive to my riddims and encouraged me all the time to keep going and a prof teacher past alpha student was also there supporting my beats with the saxophone (I love music but I am really not gifted for it) until we all together overcame what I thought it was my inability to play music!!! Now, I now I can!!! Ive I had had more lessons like that in my childhood... I could have been a rockstarrrrrr!!!!!!! at Alpha, we all can! by far the most authentic place in Kingston town.... then we stoped by the gift shop and bought some cool soundsystem tshirts!!!!!! yessss... I was part of a Jamaican band!!! They told us they would post pics and photos on their social media @alphaboysschoolradio Now I know the riddims.. the downside... I am aware of how bad I move to them:))) Thanks to the staff for the great attention. You will not be doing a tour, you will meet the Alpha-137 years old family!!!!
