What you'll do

Upon arrival on the farm, you will be met by your tour guides, Nigerian Dwarf Goats Billy Willy and Tina. Farmer Katie along with the goats will give you a half hour walking tour of the demonstration farm which includes a growing Food Forest, Pollinator Meadow and Heirloom Plant Trials. During our farm tour you will learn about the principles of permaculture and sustainable agriculture that we utilize on the farm. After a short meander through the woods and grape orchard you will arrive in the “residential” area of the farm which includes the goat barn, chicken coop, greenhouse and tiny house that was designed and built by students! We will tour the greenhouse to see what’s growing and then we will grab some bananas from the tiny house. Guests will have the opportunity to feed our goats and chickens and see them “Go Bananas” for their favorite treat! The tour will end at the goat pen where you will learn about our Speckled Sussex Chickens and Dwarf Nigerian Goats. The remainder of the ninety minute farm experience will be spent hanging out with the farm animals. There will be plenty of time for petting, brushing and of course taking selfies with them. Those who are on Instagram may want to tag themselves with our resident celebrity Little Billy the Goat – “What he lacks in size, he makes up for in kindness!”!
Other things to note
Eggs and produce will be available for purchase seasonally.

I am a certified agriculture teacher and principal. In 2009, I started an award winning suburban agriculture program at the largest school in South Carolina here in Mount Pleasant just outside of Charleston. In 2015, I founded the non-profit Growing Minds to educate and empower students of all ages to grow food everywhere. After nearly a decade in the high school classroom, I decided to leave the indoor classroom walls behind and I moved to a small four acre farm and orchard also here in suburban Mount Pleasant. I transformed the property into an educational demonstration farm showcasing various sustainable agriculture practices. I now live and teach at the farm with my ten Speckled Sussex hens and three Dwarf Nigerian goats, Willy, Billy and Tina. My favorite spots on the farm are the grape orchard, goat barn and anywhere on my tractor!

About the organization: Growing Minds Project

We educate and empower individuals to grow food everywhere! We believe that farming can no longer be restricted to rural areas. We believe that farming is not only an empowering experience but a healing one as well. Our current programming focuses on youth and Veterans. There is a time when we must put aside land for cultivation, teaching, healing and preservation. That time is now!

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Growing Minds Project .

Where you'll be

The farm is located on some of the last agricultural land left in Mount Pleasant. This demonstration farm not only teaches the principles of sustainable agriculture but preservation as well. Our mission is not only to utilize this land to educate but to preserve its' agricultural roots in the process.

Farmer Katie and the 3 goats, Willie, Billie and Tina were so welcoming and we enjoyed learning about the Growing Minds Farm. Our group included 4 kids between the ages of 6 and 2, and their parents, and Farmer Katie was great to include everyone in the tour. We especially loved feeding the goats and seeing the outdoor classroom area.

My family and I (4 adults and 2 toddlers) all had a great time! Katie is obviously very passionate and knowledgeable and her educational farm is just amazing. We would definitely recommend, and may come back in the future to experience it again. My kids especially loved feeding the goats and chickens, and exploring the goat boat.

I had a change of plans last second and wasn’t able to make this experience, but my mother went and was raving about the whole visit. She had nothing but wonderful things to say about Katie, and I’m looking forward to visiting in the future!

Great experience learning about the sustainable farming. Are for tour guides including the three goats made us feel welcome the entire experience. We were surprised at how friendly the goats were and they literally followed us the entire trip. The variety of things they are able to grow there also pleasantly surprised us. Great tour and great organization.
