Appleflats is the only commercial crabapple focused orchard in North America. Hosts Glen and Alex discovered that this heritage variety of Canadian Crabapple is disappearing off the continent and have crafted their business around preserving it and commercializing it for other future growers. See agricultural research in progress and learn what it takes to bring a new fruit from obscurity to thousands of tables a month.

Alex and Glen are probably the only people in North America that can tie the agriculture, the business and biodiversity into the same package.

I did not know what to expect, but the reality was so interesting, entertaining and informative. Glen knows so much about the crabapple tree and shared his knowledge in a humorous, entertaining manner. He and his brother have been involved in making crab apple jelly/jam since they were children. The tour was interspersed with stops around the orchard where he explained about his efforts to increase the small stock of crabapple trees. He has invested in a new rootstock growing method of espaliered trees, which allows for a high product yield. BUT he will have to wait at least 5 years to see if his efforts pay off. Now he hopes to develop his own crab apple stock. They also have a shop where they sell their crab apple jams and juices. I really recommend this tour.

Great tour! Glen is very friendly and personable, and his story about growing crabapples and the research he did was also very interesting. Well worth the visit! The property is also beautiful and the art work is fascinating.

This has got to be the best bang-for-your-buck Airbnb experience in Ontario, if not all of Canada. Glen is a wealth of knowledge and was enthusiastically willing to meet us on his day off to take us on a tour of the crabapple orchard he and Alex are bringing to fruition. Glen was extremely willing to answer any and all questions we had during the tour. The crabapple drinks and jelly were delicious and unique, and I'll definitely be looking out for Apple Flats products and supporting their vision however possible moving forward - thanks again for this amazing experience!
