What you'll do

On this excursion, we will explore in 4 different stops the huge Tarcoles River. As a place full of life, it hosts the biggest population of crocodiles in Costa Rica, which are also the largest of the continent, additionally, the birdwatching and the history around are unique.

From San José Area we will experience 75 minutes of sightseeing drive until we arrive at Carara National Park, which is just by the side of Tarcoles. This Reserve has a super easy trail that we are going to walk by the side of the Coastal Highway. The trail is 1 mile and hosts a mature forest, full of ecological interactions and a canopy top of 40 m. high. Some wildlife we could see is Scarlet Macaws, Agoutis, Poison-dart Frogs, Spider Monkeys, and huge Wild Cashew Trees.

Then, we will check the giant and unique American Crocodiles from the Tarcoles Bridge, which is a perfect and safe place to admire these prehistoric creatures, and most of the time a great spot for birding too!

On the drive back we will stop at the overlooked but unique Railroad Museum and the picturesque neighborhood by the side of the tracks! Our friend Juan Ramón, a former railroad employee has a project of conservation of history and culture and has unique access to an old train station.

As a final delight piece, we will check the longest Train Bridge of the country in the middle of a canyon covered by jungle.
Other things to note
Lunch is not included but we have a perfect spot with several options for vegetarians and seafood lovers ($5-$15 options)

After several years in the halls and classes of the School of Biology of the University of Costa Rica, I finally realized that I enjoyed much more telling stories about science and sharing with people practical lessons, rather than "doing science" in the academy.

That's why after I graduated I dedicated myself to be a guide and an environmental educator. I got the chance of working all around this small country, in different ecosystems and rural communities, but finally, I returned to my hometown. Here, San José Area, has lots of Natural History all over, from a few minutes from downtown to an hour away. That's my goal, to share all the wildlife and history behind this overlooked destination.
