What you'll do

Enjoy the stunning beauty of Santo Domingo Tomaltepec lake, bike through an ancient village, and behold the greatness of “El Tule”; the widest tree in the world.

We'll meet in downtown Oaxaca. Then, once we are geared up with helmets and our bikes, we´ll begin our journey to Santo Domingo Tomaltepec (90 min. moderate bicycle ride from downtown [15 km or 9 miles one way]).

First, we'll ride on a safe bike lane covered with tree shades which is mostly flat. During our ride, you'll get to see the outskirts of the city, beautiful hills, and a few fields.

After we arrive to Santo Domingo Tomaltepec town, we´ll get on a dirt road and start cycling uphill for the last 3 km. There will be some hills and slopes.

Once we get to the lake, we´ll spend about 30 min. walking and looking around.

We´ll start biking to Santa Maria del Tule.

Once we arrive, we´ll go directly to see El Tule tree, the colorful church and the beautiful lush gardens. We'll spend about 30 min. here.

Then, we'll go to the handicrafts market and the food market where we'll spend around 30 min. checking out the market shops, going to the restroom, and getting something to eat.

We start our ride back to Oaxaca.

I'm passionate for the outdoors. I love biking and enjoy meeting new people while promoting sustainable ecotourism in Oaxaca. This is a very interesting route because it combines nature and culture. My goal is to provide you with an unforgettable experience. I would love to share this experience with you.

I was born and raised in Oaxaca. I have lived abroad (in the USA) during my college years and I have also traveled to several countries. On my travels, I have experienced the need of local experts who can show you those "hidden gems", the sites that are off the beaten path in unique ways.

Where you'll be

Santo Domingo Tomaltepec is known for its artisan bakery and leather work. It´s also a very ancient agricultural village.

El Tule tree is located inside a gated churchyard in the picturesque town of Santa Maria del Tule. It is the widest tree in the world. It's 40 meters in height, 58 meters in circumference, and about 2,000 years old.

The Baroque-style church is called Templo de Santa María de la Asunción and dates from the 18th century.

The experience was super fun and unique! Doing it by bike was fun and different from usual tours you can get to the Tule tree, which made all difference as at the end only the tree in itself wouldn't be worth a tour. We biked countryside up and down hill (which is super fun!), the lake is beautiful and peaceful, sort of hidden, which was a very nice surprise. At the way back from the lake we went to a pueblo close-by, went to see the tree and eat in the local food market, where the people are already friends with Ivan and were super super kind to us (food was super good, BTW! We recommend highly that you follow Ivan's recommendations!!). It was totally worth it, highly recommended. I would definitely like to repeat it whenever I'm back to Oaxaca.

We had an amazing time with Ivan! This was our favorite thing we did in Oaxaca and highly recommend you spend a morning biking to some beautiful spots with a great guide. The ride itself was super mellow for me and my friend who regularly bike for recreation. Can’t recommend this trip enough, definitely the best way to see the Tule tree! If you’re a birder, bring binoculars for the lake!

Highly recommend this experience with Ivan. Communication and meet up were easy. Ivan was on time with bikes, vests, and helmets all ready to go. El Tule was on our list of places to visit, so the longer ride to the lake was a great bonus. I brought my 65 yr old parents on this ride and they also had a fun time. It was equally challenging (about 18 miles of biking) and rewarding (to escape the city center for a few hours). Ivan rode at a nice pace, welcomed any rest breaks, and helped us navigate the unprotected parts of the biking path. He even helped to recommend food at the market for my parents who prefer a vegan diet. Depending on your pace, you may return to El Centro closer to 3pm. Book this experience to enjoy a unique tour of El Tule, visit the beautiful village & lake of Tomaltepec, and have nice conversation with a Oaxacan native.
