What you'll do
Upon your arrival to Finca Alto de Abra, I will give you an overview of Costa Rica’s coffee tradition and information about our farm. Then you will visit the nursery so you can see how we reproduce coffee trees using a very particular technique in which we are pioneers in Costa Rica.
Next, we are going where the action is and you will harvest some coffee cherries! We will walk among the coffee trees, I’ll explain you how to identify which cherries are ready for harvesting and how to pick them, and if desired, I will provide you with a typical basket to pick coffee cherries for about 15 minutes or as long as you want. You will also share and talk with the coffee pickers that are working at the time of your visit so you can have a better idea of who they are and the important work they do.
After that, you will visit the micro-mill where we process the cherries for specialty coffee. I’ll explain about the different processes and you’ll see firsthand how this is done.
We will finish the experience with a tasting session to enjoy our different specialty micro-lots. Also, water and soft drinks will be available. I’ll be more than happy to answer all your questions and I promise you that after this visit you will never see a cup of coffee the same way!
Other things to note
Finca Alto de Abra is located 30 minutes from San José. The fastest way to arrive to the farm is by Uber (from San José the ride could cost around USD $13).

I’m the fifth generation of the Hernández family that grows coffee in Finca Alto de Abra. I’ve been among coffee trees since I can remember, first with my grandfather, now with my dad. I think it is fair to say coffee runs in my blood. I’m passionate about growing superb quality coffee, working a land I deeply love and respect. I feel blessed to continue my family’s legacy.
Where you'll be
The entire experience will take place at Finca Alto de Abra during the harvesting season (December through February). The harvesting season is very special as it is the busiest time of the year in the farm and a unique opportunity for you to experience first hand how specialty coffee is produced from seed to cup.

This coffee tour was outstanding. Claudia took the time to explain every process from start to finish about coffee. She answered any questioned we had and the whole experience was not rushed at all. Very informative and fun. I now know how specialty coffee is produced in Costa Rica!

This experience with Claudia on her family farm so special. We spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica and this was one of the main highlights for sure!
Claudia was sure to take time to hear about us and our expectations, she never rushed us and was open to all of our questions.
We learned so much about the coffee plant, process, the cultural important in Costa Rica and for Claudia's family (among many other things). We definitely went home with some specialty Finca De Alto Abra coffee!

Claudia! She and her mom are very welcoming! We were late (my bad to remember time wrongly), and she and the other 2 people made us feel comfortable soon when we met them. We visited the end to end coffee beans making process, many new varieties, and I was impressed by their passion of coffee. It’s a great value tour, farm is well located, learnt a lot in a short time! Thank you Claudia!
