Honestly, a lot of experiences that I saw when browsing through the app seemed so mundane and very “touristy”. I saw Salam’s experience and immediately was intrigued. I didn’t regret a single moment of going there and she deserved every penny that was spent. Salam is a very warm person with a kind heart. She made me and my boyfriend feel welcomed and was so very courteous. She was an expert in her field and you can see the passion she had when you engaged back to her on the topic she is so very versed in. Her knowledge is immense and her credentials in her field are glowing! At the end of it all, you will come out relaxed and having a souvenir that you can’t find anywhere else because it was handcrafted with love and hard work! Truly an amazing thing to leave Japan with. I have nothing negative to say for this experience and I think if you want a one-of-a-kind experience with a memorable soul, definitely go for this experience. You won’t regret it one bit.

Book this experience! If this experience is available when you are visiting Tokyo, then stop looking and book this experience with Salam Mio. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough! You will leave with a deeper understanding of incense and aroma, from history and culture, to sourcing and larger global context for the art and craft of traditional incense. Salam Mio's deep passion and loving care for incense culture (and tea culture, and religion, and art, and fine tastes) are strong and clear, and leave a lasting impression on every guest. My husband and I enjoyed this experience on our very first morning after arriving in Japan, and it remains a highlight of our entire visit. We enjoyed this experience with one other guest, and Salam quickly helped all three of us become friendly and comfortable together. By the end of the experience, I felt as though all four of us had formed a genuine connection. Thanks to Salam Mio's hospitality, three strangers parted as friends. As an aside, Komagome is a fantastic neighborhood! I had some familiarity with incense culture and ingredients before taking this class, but I left with newfound understanding. That said, I believe that even newcomers with no incense experience would really enjoy every moment of the class. Anyone with an interest in taste (foodies, whiskey / sake / wine / tea lovers) or aromas will love this course. Being able to experience the aroma of each separate ingredient was incredible and invaluable. Then, building our own incense blend and experiencing the change in aroma with each new combination filled me with deep and newfound respect for both the craft of incense and the practice of kodo / xiang dao. I was so grateful to meet Salam Mio and to be able to learn with her. I recommend any of her hosted experiences to anyone, at any time.

I have taught Japanese scents at cultural centers since 2004. I am a qualified master of scents, something very few people can achieve. I am also a master of Japanese tea, having earned my certification from the NPO Nihoncha Instructor Association. I have been teaching my own scent class for companies and schools since 2004 with combined healing sessions. Furthermore, I have been a licensed aroma therapy instructor since 2000, when I began hosting healing classes.
