What you'll do

We will set out on boat to a preapproved GPS coordinate to deploy our nets. You will help the staff, by jumping into the water with your snorkle, to check the nets are ok. ( Optional)
Our participants will then wait on the beach for any sign of a turtle!
Once a sea turtle is caught the biologist will untangle them from the net and bring them into the boat for transport to the beach. Once at the beach we begin our monitoring.
We take the weight of the turtle, the biometrics (weight, size of the carapace, plastron, and tail), tag them with metal tags (or record existing tag numbers), take a tissue sample (if no pre-existing tags), and record any injuries or abnormalities.
Each sea turtle, depending on the size, takes 10-30 minutes to complete the needed monitoring.
The nets are deployed for 6 hours each ocean day
Participants will receive training and information on all data collection.
Other things to note
If you have a snorkle and mask please bring it.
Please remember that this is a research project, and there are days when we do not catch turtles. Although disappointing, it is also important data.

Coolest experience ever!!!! We got to spend a few hours working with amazing people who are truly passionate about helping our eco-systems and our turtles! We were lucky enough to find two turtles! They helped us to safely handle the turtles and to record all of the necessary data to help further the research.

I had such a fun time on this experience! We left at 7:30, taking a short boat trip to deploy the nets and then went back to shore to wait. They explained how the research works and what the organization is about. About an hour in, we caught our first turtle. I was able to help pull the turtle out of the water and untangle her from the nets. Then we brought her to shore and started collecting all of the biometric data. I was so excited to be able to be so involved in the process!! I helped measure the shell size, conditions, and weight. We caught another male turtle that day too! Definitely one of the coolest days of my life, and I hope to come back some day!

I learned so much and did it while hanging out with some lovely people for an amazing cause in a wonderful natural environment. What LAST is doing is such important work and I find myself very grateful that LAST allowed us the chance to be a part of it.

Thank you for an inspiring sea turtle tour. It was very interesting to learn about your projects and to see the areas with the newly planted mangroves. No turtle was in the net that day but that is the nature and while we were swimming in the really warm sea we saw many many turtles in all sizes coming up to breathe. An amazing experience .

Wow! What an amazing educational experience with LAST. The biologists and volunteers were all very kind and willing to answer questions we had. We traveled with our two daughters 8 and 4 and they both were super excited to meet a hawksbill turtle and help assist with measurements. We learned lots about the mangroves and their importance to a balanced ecosystem. Would recommend anyone seeking to learn more about turtles and nature. Thank you all!
