What you'll do

In the middle of the heart and soul of downtown Oaxaca in a cosy and traditional place, we will taste 7 type moles and seven different Mezcales. Get a framework for how to think about mezcal, in a way that regular tastings and visits to local mezcal bars do not offer. Try seven handcrafted moles of Oaxaca, all in a single experience. The tasting contains all the educational values of a Sommelier wine tasting, as well as the space to ask all you want. The Mezcales that you will try are carefully selected as they differentiate the characteristics of the different Agaves: Espadin, Cuishe, Madre Cuishe, Tobala, Tepeztate, Arroqueño and a blend. Its is an educational and pleasant-tasting paired with a different mole for each mezcal.
Ask and discuss your impressions, share and meet people that want to enjoy the Mezcal experience at a different level.

Certified Sommelier Daniel Rodriguez Gonzalez is a
filmmaker, seasoned traveller, historian, and enthusiast of life. His passion for wine began as a child while listening to his grandfather tell stories of making wine in Spain; from his first sip at age 12, he knew wine had many stories to tell. After studying film at in Mexico City, he began to travel the world, documenting stories as diverse as shamanic practices in México or walking 500 miles crossing Spain doing the Way of Saint James.
Working at a wine bar in Madrid, and later as Tasting Room Manager at Texas’ Spicewood Vineyards, he discovered he liked teaching others about wine as much as he enjoyed drinking it. Nothing makes him happier today than finding that Mezcal is as diverse and exciting as the world of wine.

This is a great way to try mezcals. In the typical mezcal tasting, you just try one mezcal after another—-my mouth goes numb after the second one. Adding the moles really helps to cleanse the palate. We’ve done half a dozen mescal tastings and this was by far my favorite. And the mexcals are good.

This was a very fun and informative experience. The location is gorgeous. Daniel is an excellent host and has a deep knowledge of both mezcal and mole. In additional to the tasting, there were included cocktails and bottles of the mezcal that was tasted available to be purchased. I must’ve asked a dozen questions and Daniel answered every single one and many others by the other participants. Highly recommend this if you want to taste some excellent mole and mezcal, learn about what goes into making them and have a lot of fun.

Fantastic tasting alfresco with a very knowledgeable host! So much better than the usual tourist trap mezcal tours. Plan on eating at the restaurant afterwards (and get the chocolate mole ice cream).

Daniel provided a well-rounded and educated experience for us to try his Mezcal and mole pairings. He really knows his stuff and the ambiance of Ancestral made it a 11/10 experience. Even strangers came together as friends by the end.
