What you'll do

We will go into the bog (also known as peatland, mire, moor, swamp) - Kemeru Mire with the bog/snowshoes beyond the nature trails, to the parts where without the bog shoes, it would be impossible. My husband Uldis Ozols will do coring to show you what is under the nice moss layer - meters of peat and a thousand years of past. But my colleague Normunds Stvirins - an active scientist and Assoc. Professor in Quaternary geology and geomorphology at the University of Latvia will tell about the latest research in vegetation history, climate change, and how it is related to peatlands. Almost in all districts of Latvia (110) there are at least one or two beautiful natural bogs. Upon your other plans, we can find bog that is in the same region you are going to. Do you know where the basil, tomatoes, salats start their life? In peat. And do you know who is the most significant peat production region in the EU? Right - Baltics. Another unique possibility we offer is to visit peat production site and see peat extraction process, production of growing media (substrate), and explain why peat is part of your daily meal. To conclude - we will see peatland in 360 perspective - from nature conservation, science, ecosystem services to economic, cultural, and social point of view.

Your hosts

I love peatlands. It started when I was writing my Bachelor thesis about peatlands, then Master thesis, and finally, my PhD thesis was about peatland formation, development, peat properties, vegetation history 10 000 years ago and since nowadays. In parallel, I was working in Latvian Peat Producers Association, hosting IPS International Peat Technology Symposium, and that gave me another point of view on peatlands as a source of peat used for growing media. I'm also co-founder of Lake and Peatlands Research Center, a member of the Board of Responsibly Produced Peat, a member of The Advisory Council of the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund. I live in a small village surrounded by many beautiful bogs.
