What you'll do

*ASK US ABOUT REDUCED PRICING for children 14 yrs and under. Free 6 yrs and under.* The tour can change, as we’re a working farm so anything might come up and we’ll take you along to shadow us. However, the typical tour goes something like this: We set you up with mud boots and take you Azorean style to the pasture where our adult cows are grazing. There, in the center of all our cows, you’ll understand why we’re a sustainable dairy farm all while petting our cows and experiencing each of their unique behavior. Then you’ll help us walk the cows from pasture to the milking barn (just like you see other farmers do on the streets throughout the island - the so called "cow jams"). While the cows snack at the milking barn, we’ll take you through a scenic drive to meet our teenage cows. Afterwards, you can see the baby calves and then we begin the milking where you are welcome to experience milking a cow yourself by hand and with the machine. We end with a picnic-style tasting of the fresh milk you just milked and other local delights. The tour starts at either 3:30pm or 4:30pm, depending on the time of year, and typically lasts about 2 – 3 hours. (If you have small children and need a shorter tour, we’d be happy to try and accommodate you.)

We are the owners of The Farm (by ÂMAGO). My husband is a 3rd generation Azorean dairy farmer and I have a background in Sustainable Development and Holistic Health. We have been working tirelessly to bring food production and human health FULL CIRCLE by converting our farm into one that benefits the environment, produces products that nourish the human body, and to get eaters to know their food and their farmer. We are currently studying to become farmers certified in holistic management and regenerative agriculture.

You'll see local farmers, cows, birds, wild rabbits, and a surprise native mammal. Like most local farms, our pastures are spread throughout the village, giving you the opportunity to explore the back roads with us and take in stunning views before stopping at our milking barn to milk the fresh milk you can taste.

The experience was amazing! Gena and her husband were very welcoming and took a lot of time to tell us their story and answer our numerous questions about the farm life. We got up close with the cows and were able to pet and milk them. I can definitely recommend taking this tour if you are interested in the life of a dairy farmer!

My 17-year old daughter and I had a wonderful experience with Gena and her husbond (and their cows!). Not only was it a fantastic introduction to Azorean dairy farming, but it was a great introduction to the island, it's history, and culture. It's amazing what a special experience this was and it is really not to be missed if you truly want a true taste of living on the Azores.
