What you'll do

A look into the wonderful world of the honey bee.

We will give you a talk on being safe around bees and what you will see in the hive, the different parts that make up a hive, the life-cycle of the honey bee, the different equipment we use in beekeeping.

Then we will put on our bee suits and have a look in some working beehives, where we will teach you how to identify the Queen bee, worker bees and the drones. We will also take a taste of honey straight from the hive. We will see where the baby bees are grown, find the eggs and lava, identify wax and propolis.

You will get a full bee suit to wear and gloves, so If you want to handle the bees you are most welcome, but if you just want to observe then that’s fine too.

If it's a nice day and the bees are happy and out foraging then we may get to see the bee dance.

We will then take a look at our honey processing room/honey packing room, depending on what time of year it is.

Then we will have some lite refreshments where you get to enjoy our raw honey on a hot crumpet or toast, honey tastings and any questions you may have on bees.

Each honey bee adventurer will get a jar of our wonderful honey to take with them.

If it’s wet but the weather is not to bad, then we can do this undercover, but if its windy and wet or a storm then we will have to cancel as the bees like to stay warm and dry like us.

I have been beekeeping since 2007 and started the Waiheke Honey Company Ltd. in 2010, and love sharing the wonderful world of the honey bee with anyone who is interested. We pride ourselves in running a sustainable family beekeeping business.
We have been featured in many magazine articles here in NZ & overseas.
I have given talks on bees to all ages from 7-90 year olds and I mentor other hobby beekeepers here on the island. We run special interest tours for groups of up to 35 people, everything from university graduates just out of business school from the USA, to overseas groups in NZ on business conferences.
We have a small boutique honey business and run around 100 hives here on Waiheke island and Poinui island. We do everything from raising queen bees to extracting and pack all our honey here onsite.

Richard is an amazing host, me and my 13 years old Son had a wonderful time. It’s a such memorable experience to learn so much about honey in one trip. I highly recommended to everyone!

This was an activity I stumbled across during my short holiday in Auckland... I decided on a whim to do it, as it’s something I’ve never done before and a chance to explore Waiheke Island with local makers and produce. It was such a wonderful day, Richard is so down to earth and full of knowledge and passion for his craft. I left with a greater appreciation for bees the care that artisan makers have in ensuring their produce (and producers aka happy honey bees) are at their very best. The honey is truly exceptional and unique in flavour profile, inspiring and delicious. The locals are so friendly here and it was this and the entire experience on the island (go try Matuku oysters from the source!) that made me feel so lucky in this tropical paradise. Thank you so much!

Richard is super passionate about bees and beekeeping! We had an excellent couple of hours learning all about these amazing insects and all of the things that go into producing jars of delicious raw honey on Waiheke Island. He even "converted" one of us from a non-honey eater into a total addict...nice work!!
