What you'll do
Update: We are OPEN and SAFE. CA and SD are allowing Covid friendly outdoor activities like kayaking to stay open.
La Jolla Bay is a Marine Protected Area that is home to a thriving ecosystem that boasts a high concentration of sea life, has a natural boat launch, which allows safe ocean entry year round, and is famous for its Sea Caves and Marine Reserve.
No experience is required. Your guide will kick things off with a paddle tutorial on the beach. If surf exists we will help push your kayak through any breakers.
As we paddle through La Jolla’s Marine Reserve keep an eye out for Seals, Sea Lions, Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Dolphin and Gray whales in the fall/winter. Note: We cannot always guarantee sea life.
If conditions are safe we will help guide your kayak into Emerald Cave. We have to kayak over and visually inspect the caves to know if it’s safe to enter. Note: if not safe we will not enter and spend a minute inside.
La Jolla Bay is an Uncontrollable Environment. Please come enjoy this place we love knowing each day is different than the last.
Satisfaction Guarantee. Do not feel this was a 5 star trip, message me for a refund.
We are members of 1% For The Planet. Which has given back more than 270 million to the environment.
Great for families, all skill levels & all ages over 5!

I have loved being on the water my entire life and with great friends, we started Everyday California, an adventure and apparel company, in 2010. Our GUIDES are experts on the water and will make sure you have a memorable experience!
I am permitted by the City of San Diego and SD's Lifeguard Services to operate a kayak concession in La Jolla.

Where you'll be
We'll meet at Everyday California, 2261 Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla, CA 92037, which is located just blocks away from the La Jolla Shores Boat Launch, Underwater Park, 7 Sea Caves & Ecological Reserve. Our shop has lockers & wetsuits for all shapes and sizes to rent and 5 fitting rooms. Once geared up it's a quick walk to La Jolla's natural boat launch: There is a 12% City Tax that helps SD hire more lifeguards.

Our tour guide Patrick was super nice, informative and kept a steady pace for the whole group. We took plenty of breaks during which time he told us fun facts about La Jolla and the marine life there. We even got lucky and saw a gray whale fairly close to our group!
However, there are two things you should know before booking.
1: This is run by a brick and mortar shop called Everyday California in La Jolla. That’s not a problem, but it does mean that AirBnB does not charge you the local taxes that come with that when you book. They didn’t tell us about this before we arrived and so when we checked in we were asked to pay $8 for my boyfriend and myself. It’s inexpensive and actually not that big of a deal, but I know I like to be aware of everything ahead of time so just expect that going into it.
2: If you are from California or have been out on the water before, you likely already know this, but you cannot go in the caves during the winter. Even on a sunny day the water can be choppy and it’s just not safe. We were told none of the companies in La Jolla have been able to go out there for months and the one employee that did try to take their group into the caves left with several customers who almost got hurt.
That being said, visiting during the winter is more fun (in my opinion) because hardly anyone else was out on the water and it was so peaceful without the noisy beach goers. But if the caves are the main attraction for you, I would suggest waiting for the summer.
Overall it was a fun experience that I would recommend to anyone, whether you’re a California Native looking for a COVID-friendly outlet or a visitor going out onto the water for the first time.

This was a great experience and an easy one too. Michael and Friends were wonderful and flexible making sure we got the most out of our experience. We had to switch times on our scheduled day due to weather issues and they took care of it all with ease. Highly recommend.

Waves were pretty big for our trip, so we couldn’t go close to caves. Didn’t see any life either. However, our guide was super nice and told us a lot of information about the area. He also let us swim around out in the open water and gave us great snorkeling advice. Definitely worth doing if you have a couple hours :)
