What you'll do

Available Dec-March. Gray Whales provide kayakers with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities when leaving the waters of the Arctic & heading south to the lagoons of Mexico. We'll push every kayak safely through any waves before paddling out of the reserve. The tour heads due west from the shore & stops about 2 miles out, putting you alongside the path of the whale migration. I'll offer interesting facts & history about the surrounding area & marine life along the voyage. Seeing these majestic mammals is truly awe-inspiring.
I'll be there to make sure you have the most intimate & amazing experience. Part of that is a strict adherence to the Marine Mammal Protection Act & the Ocean Etiquette Guidelines established by National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In accordance with the laws & guidelines, we remain at least 100 yards away from whales & 50 yards away from dolphins. We avoid following behind or directly approaching in front of these animals. However these gentle giants have been known to approach boats, kayaks, etc. By following these guidelines, we ensure that we are safe, do not disturb these amazing creatures of the sea & have a wondrous experience.
Other things to note
**If the time/date listed doesn't work for you I can be flexible with availability on most days.**
We only enter 1 cave & entering is weather dependent. Prepare to get wet & have fun. Check in 30 mins early. 10% City Tax collected at arrival. We donate to 1% For Planet & Greenwave on all bookings.

I am a San Diego native, yogi & marine science nerd. I have led countless snorkeling & diving adventures all around San Diego. If I'm not in the ocean surfing, diving or snorkeling I'm near it weather it be exploring hidden sea caves at negative low tides, seeking tide pools, lobster hoop netting or educating myself all about it. I love sharing unique experiences with those who have similar passions. Not many people know of the amazing marine life San Diego offers, that's why I'm here!

Where you'll be

We'll meet at Everyday California, they'll be providing us with our gear. They're located just blocks away from the La Jolla Shores Beach & Ecological Reserve. The beach is approximately one mile long & stretches from the sea cliffs just north of La Jolla Cove to Black's Beach south of Torrey Pines State Park. We'll head to the kayak launching area in La Jolla Shores, a straight walk west from their store.

Danielle was so nice and super knowledgeable. We didn’t get to see whales but we saw other marine life that really made the experience. I got a tad sea sick so Danielle provided ginger chews and other tips to help settle my stomach. Overall it was a great experience!

Danielle is a great and gracious host. She’s knowledgeable and sincere. She made the trip great. We did not see any whales or wildlife and did not stop in caves at the end due to high tide but I found it a good 1st experience. Some seemed like they had a difficult time with the exertions in some parts but Danielle was a good guide.

As a solo traveller, I had a great time ocean kayaking with Danielle and the other guests. It was a magical experience and our group was able to see THREE whales in the distance. There was a baby too. Danielle's love for the ocean and sea life is clearly visible as she story tells and guides.

Danielle was fun and bubbly and a great guide! Unfortunately, the whales didn't pop out to visit, but we did get to see many sea lions swimming around. We had a great time and the weather was perfect - all in all a fun experience!

It's a beautiful location and Danielle is chock full of interesting knowledge about the area as well as all the sea creatures. We didn't see any whales this time around, but that's not something you can count on. We had a wonderful experience paddling around in the ocean and enjoying the beautiful day. It was a reasonably small group and we were able to hear just fine. If you haven't done much ocean kayaking before and you'd like to have a guide to help you safely navigate that terrain, this is a great choice.
