What you'll do

This will be a beatiful and safe bike ride to see the massive and ancient "El Tule" tree, which is famous for being the widest tree in the world. We´ll also see part of the town of "Santa Maria del Tule", its church and its market.

We'll meet in downtown Oaxaca. Then, once we are geared up with helmets and our bikes, we´ll begin our journey to El Arbol del Tule (45 min. bicycle ride from downtown [10 km or 6 miles one way]).

We'll ride on a nice bike lane covered with tree shades for the most part. It's mostly flat. During our ride, you'll get to see the outskirts of the city, beautiful hills, and a few crop fields.

Once we arrive to Santa Maria del Tule, we'll go directly to see El Tule tree, the colorful church and the beautiful lush gardens. We'll spend about 30 min. here (if you need more time that's fine).

Then, we'll go to the handicrafts market and the food market where we'll spend around 30 min. checking out the market shops, going to the restroom, and getting something to eat.

We'll start our ride back to Oaxaca.

I'm passionate for the outdoors. I love biking and enjoy meeting new people while promoting sustainable ecotourism in Oaxaca. I love taking visitors on this route because it is a unique way to experience and see the beautiful town of "Santa Maria del Tule" which is known for its massive and ancient tree "El Tule" and also to have an active day. My goal is to provide you with an unforgettable experience. I would love to share this experience with you.

I was born and raised in Oaxaca. I have lived abroad (in the USA) during my college years and I have also traveled to several countries. On my travels, I have experienced the need of local experts who can show you those "hidden gems", the sites that are off the beaten path in unique ways.

Where you'll be

The road we'll take is mainly used by locals so you'll get to see more about authentic Oaxaca and the outskirts of the city.

El Tule tree is located inside a gated churchyard in the picturesque town of Santa Maria del Tule. It is the widest tree in the world. It's 40 meters in height, 58 meters in circumference, and about 2,000 years old.

The Baroque-style church is called Templo de Santa María de la Asunción and dates from the 18th century.

The bike ride to El Tule provides a completely different experience of Oaxaca. This is unlike walking or driving. The pace of the bike ride provides for both exercise and a slow departure from the city into the countryside. Ivan is clearly experienced and made us all feel safe, including my 12yo daughter who hadn't been on a bicycle in several years. The tree in El Tule is quite a sight and the food in the market was some of the best we had during our week-long stay in Oaxaca. Ivan is knowledgable about the area, both Oaxaca and Santa María del Tule, about the gardens, the church, and the markets. His explanations in English and Spanish made all the difference for our group. I am so glad we had an opportunity to do this!

We had an awesome time!! The bike ride was relatively easy and it was also incredible to see more of the city along the way. The bike path was great and shaded for most of the ride. Ivan was also an incredible host! He really wanted to make sure everyone in the group had a great time and was safe. Highly recommend!!

Ivan was the best! I wasn’t feeling great but he was super caring and helpful. He made sure I had everything I needed the entire time. He introduced us to the beautiful town of El Tule and had great historical insight.

A wonderful experience! Ivan is very kind and adaptable. We had one member of our group who had intermittent problems, but Ivan was able to help them and continue our ride as planned. Very kind, very fun.

Ivan is a kind and gracious host who runs his tour to keep up with any level level of biker. I wouldn’t have seen the parts of town we saw on bike otherwise, or even thought to ride a bike anywhere - and doing so, particularly with Ivan as a guide, was wonderful. The tour is definitely worth your time. 👍

Having a bike ride to the tree of El Tule was a great experience. We were able to see different parts of Oaxaca during the bike ride and it was very safe. Ivan was a great host and guide, he provided all the safety equipment and was thoughtful on every aspect, even that we weren’t bike experts.
