What you'll do

This will be a beatiful and safe bike ride to see the massive and ancient "El Tule" tree, which is famous for being the widest tree in the world. We´ll also see part of the town of "Santa Maria del Tule", its church and its market.

We'll meet in downtown Oaxaca. Then, once we are geared up with helmets and our bikes, we´ll begin our journey to El Arbol del Tule (45 min. bicycle ride from downtown [10 km or 6 miles one way]).

We'll ride on a nice bike lane covered with tree shades for the most part. It's mostly flat. During our ride, you'll get to see the outskirts of the city, beautiful hills, and a few crop fields.

Once we arrive to Santa Maria del Tule, we'll go directly to see El Tule tree, the colorful church and the beautiful lush gardens. We'll spend about 30 min. here (if you need more time that's fine).

Then, we'll go to the handicrafts market and the food market where we'll spend around 30 min. checking out the market shops, going to the restroom, and getting something to eat.

We'll start our ride back to Oaxaca.

I'm passionate for the outdoors. I love biking and enjoy meeting new people while promoting sustainable ecotourism in Oaxaca. I love taking visitors on this route because it is a unique way to experience and see the beautiful town of "Santa Maria del Tule" which is known for its massive and ancient tree "El Tule" and also to have an active day. My goal is to provide you with an unforgettable experience. I would love to share this experience with you.

I was born and raised in Oaxaca. I have lived abroad (in the USA) during my college years and I have also traveled to several countries. On my travels, I have experienced the need of local experts who can show you those "hidden gems", the sites that are off the beaten path in unique ways.

Where you'll be

The road we'll take is mainly used by locals so you'll get to see more about authentic Oaxaca and the outskirts of the city.

El Tule tree is located inside a gated churchyard in the picturesque town of Santa Maria del Tule. It is the widest tree in the world. It's 40 meters in height, 58 meters in circumference, and about 2,000 years old.

The Baroque-style church is called Templo de Santa María de la Asunción and dates from the 18th century.

Great bike trip to the tree! I especially loved the local tips Ivan gave about ordering food at the market. I found my new favorite drink, Tejate. Good history lessons and perspectives on culture. I made a new friend with another participant and that was great.

This was such a highlight during my stay in Oaxaca. To be able to hop on a bicycle in the city and travel through local neighborhoods, farmland, etc., on a mostly shaded and flat pedestrian path all the way to the world's largest tree was seriously magical. It was definitely a manageable 12-mile ride, but it does take some effort and stamina. The tree is so worth the visit!!! And Ivan was full of knowledge and stories. Very charming man!

We really enjoyed our bike tour with Ivan. He was great to get along with and gave us a lot of history of Oaxaca. Will be calling him for future tours next time we are back!

This was a nice and relaxing ride. We visited the tree (unfortunately you couldn’t come close as it was fenced). We stopped by a local market on the way back and tried some tasty local food. Ivan was very hospitable and provided good local recommendations.

An easy ride, no hills and the bike trail is shaded. The town is immaculate and quiet with friendly residents. Ivan has great knowledge of the area, and if you want more of a challenge it’s certain he can accommodate.

Great time spent biking down to El Tule. Highly recommend going with Ivan. The ride is on a bike path for most of the 6 miles there so it felt a lot safer than riding on the streets.
