What you'll do

This intriguing tour takes us on a journey through historic Cato Manor and the bustling Indian Township of Chatsworth. We stop at two of the oldest Hindu Temples in Africa and then head on to visit the colorful Bangladesh Market for some shopping and a taste of local Indian snacks and pickles. The Nelson Mandela Chatsworth Youth Centre is our next stop with lunch being served at the beautiful Sri Sri Radha Radhanath Temple after a tour of the temple grounds and main hall. One or two surprise stops will be thrown in for good measure!

Chatsworth was born at the height of apartheid's madness when the government sought to ghettoise persons of 'Indian' origin into what it intended to be a frozen racial landscape.

Our tour unravels the story of a community that grew from a project of racist social engineering, how it transformed over time through need and creativity by the people living there and what this social space means today, 50 years after its formation.

I studied Tourism Management and was recruited by an airline before completing my degree. Went back to university to complete studies whilst working. Developed a passion for my city, its history and its people. Became a certified Tour Guide in order to professionally convey my passion to guests visiting my amazing community. Established Travel Bug Tours, a small tour company based in Glenwood, Durban. Became a training facilitator at Sensys Training to teach short courses such as Events Management, Financial Management and Supervisory Skills Training, all whilst still working for a major airline at King Shaka International Airport.
I lived and schooled in the township of Chatsworth. I was intimately involved in the religious community at the time and have personal knowledge and experience regarding many of the sites we are visiting.

When Dominic invited me on this tour, I was a little skeptical at first. I live in Durban and thought it would be just another township tour but I have never really explored Chatsworth so I went along. I'm glad I did. The tour was insightful and interesting. Food was amazing, tasting the pickles and savories at the market reminded me of when I used to work at an Indian restaurant while I was in school, I haven't tasted authentic Durban pickles like that in a while! Dominic was super knowledgeable and funny, regaling us with stories from his childhood in Chatsworth. I would highly recommend this tour, its interesting and good value for money.

Dominic was a great host and storyteller. He put us at ease right from the beginning and it felt like we were taking a drive with a group of friends. I personally learned many new things about Chatsworth that I did not know before. It made me think more about my own heritage and family history. My favorite aspect of the tour was visiting the many beautiful temples around Chatsworth and seeing how the many different faiths live in harmony even though they are so close together. I would definitely recommend!
