Ikebana in a 200 Year Old Ryokan

Kyoto, Japan

Experience hosted by Kojiro And Seanacey

2 hours
Includes drinks, equipment
Up to 4 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

You'll get a hands-on introduction to Japanese flower arranging, using seasonal branches and flowers to create beautiful compositions, as well as an overview of the materials/tools necessary for ikebana.

To start off, I'll serve you tea while we chat about the history of ikebana (originating 500 years ago right here in Kyoto!) and its evolution into a contemporary art form. Then you'll have the chance to try a classical composition, emphasizing seasonality, lines, space, and form. Finally, let your creativity run wild and use the same floral materials to create your own freestyle arrangement. We'll include dedicated time for photos so you can capture your finished arrangements.

I've designed the workshop to be accessible for everyone from beginners to experienced florists. If this is your first time working with flowers, have no fear! We'll work together to create a beautiful arrangement. If you are more experienced and have specific goals with regard to techniques or materials, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your requests.

Workshops are held on the 1st floor of historic Kinse Ryokan, which has a 250 year history.
Other things to note
Must arrange your own transportation to our building.

You can keep your luggage in the building during the workshop.

This experience is hosted by Seanacey:

I started practicing ikebana 10 years ago and in 2014 I was given permission to teach by the Sogetsu sect of ikebana. I am passionate about ikebana as an art rooted in traditional Japanese culture but constantly evolving to be accessible for people all over the world. In addition to teaching workshops I create floral arrangements for shops, events, photoshoots, and art collaborations.

A note about workshop timing: I have most workshops set at 10:00am but if you would prefer an earlier start time I can often accommodate. Afternoon workshops are also sometimes possible, please feel free to ask!

Where you'll be

We'll be in the cafe-bar at Kinse Ryokan, a unique building with more than 200 years of history. The neighborhood is a former geisha district and as you arrange flowers you'll be surrounded by the room's parquet floors and elaborate stained glass featuring peonies, pheasants, and butterflies.

We'd wanted to try ikebana for a while: Seanacey was a great host who gave us lots of useful tips. The course was fun and set in a beautiful renovated ryokan.

Such a wonderful experience! Highly recommend to absolutely everyone. Seanacey was lovely - extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. We got to learn about the history of ikebana, ask questions, make two flower arrangements each and enjoy a nice brew - all in a historic, beautiful ryokan. Thanks again Seanacey! We will definitely be trying our own arrangements at home!

Me and my girlfriend loved this experience! The location was unique as it was in a Japanese Ryokan. I feel like I left with enough knowledge to create our own floral arrangements when we return home

Our stay was fantastic. The room itself is huge and the space as a whole is super unique. A very memorable experience for us and such a pleasure getting to know Kojiro and Seanacey. they're great people with great energy. The bar is beautiful and so much fun to be able to grab drinks in the morning and on our way back after a long day of touring the city. Also a tip - the cafe across the street called Hygge is fantastic. Great for a coffee or breakfast/lunch. 2nd tip - seanacey hosts an Ikebana flower arranging workshop which is also a lot of fun and very insightful. highly recommended. Hope we can make it back someday!
