Martin was an amazing guide who walked with me through Prague on a wonderful private tour. The tour is worthwhile any time during your stay -- at the beginning for an overview of the city or later on, when you want to dive deeper into Prague history.
Martin is a Pilsen university-trained archeologist. He was involved in a Prague dig whose excervations are shown in the Palladium shopping mall. Pieces of buildings right outside the city wall from the Romanesque Period of Prague can be seen there. Martin will tell you about lots of other historical sites. When the Four Seasons Hotel next to the Charles Bridge, for example, was built, ancient wooden bridge head structures were torn down. The deepest regret his archeology professor had in all of his career was that this structure was not preserved. The "new" Charles bridge is of course historically very interesting too, and Martin can tell you the stories about the various historical figures displayed.
Since I had told Martin in advance that I love gardens, he made sure to stop by a beautiful monastary rose garden, which I would have never found by myself. Do tell Martin in advance what you are interested in, and he will adjust his tour accordingly. John Lennon wall? The cathedral plaza where Vaclav Havel was cheered at? Jan Hus stories? The Cerny peeing statues in front of the Kafka museum?
My trip was "pre-season" so I had a private tour but typically Martin walks with 2 to up to 10 people (which is a small group compared to the many other huge tourists groups you will see).
Martin will provide you with lots of good photography opportunities. He'll show you amazing views of the city, the river, the castle, churches, cozy alleys, etc. He'll also take pictures with your cameras so that you have some nice shots of yourselves.
Lots of fun, good conversation, unforgettable day!!!
