What you'll do
We'll start with familiarizing ourselves with the basics of mushrooms as organisms, food, medicine, and fungal curiosities - What are mushrooms - How do they grow - How can they be used - How does one work with them Then we will talk about how to grow mushrooms at home. I will give you a brief tour of my lab and talk about - Different methods for growing mushrooms - Bags, jars, gardens, and logs - What do mushrooms need to grow - How to work with mushroom cultures We will cover the basics of mushroom hunting in the Pacific Northwest - Words used to describe them - How to avoid poisonous ones - Common mushrooms for beginners to identify - Where to find them I will often touch on a variety of other topics like Websites, books, organizations, places, hiking, research, ecology, permaculture, Fungi Perfecti, Radical Mycology, Fantastic Fungi, Paul Stamets, David Aurora, Mt Rainier, and citizen science. Depending on my active projects, we may make grow kits, grain spawn, revive some of my backup cultures, plan a mushroom garden, or try something new. If any of these sound particularly interesting to you, please message me in advance so that I may prepare. I should have some options for things to take home. (note: traveling internationally with mushrooms is often prohibited by Customs)
I am a mushroom forager, and cultivator who loves to share the wonderful world of fungi with others. I have hosted the Seattle Mycology Meetup for the past 2 years, help to organize the Spring mushroom show for the Puget Sound Mycological Society, and teach courses on mushroom identification for beginners. Over the past 5 years I have taken over 5000 photos of mushrooms around the US as well as Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Singapore, and Japan. I have never been secretive with my foraging spots because as a hiker, I am constantly visiting new areas. I have spent hundreds of nights in a tent and can offer lots of advice on safety, navigation, and preparation for foraging in the Pacific Northwest. I have a small mushroom lab in my home used for cultivating a variety of gourmet mushrooms like oyster, shiitake, and lion's mane.
I will have a variety of drinks and snacks available

Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside of the Airbnb website or app.

As I am hosting in my home, there are typical house-related limitations and considerations. I have a somewhat narrow turn in a staircase leading to the lab space. I also have a cat so those with allergies may want to consider other options.
