i pick up from hotel 04:30, then we will continue our trip until we reach the village of Mollepata where we will enjoy a typical breakfast in the area. After breakfast we will return to our bus to continue our tour of the Humantay Lagoon. So that we can observe the beautiful landscapes and ravines that surround us until we reach Soraypampa, where our walk to the Humantay Lagoon will begin.
Here our specialized guide will give us enough time to be able to list our team such as, poles, water, personal backpacks etc.
We will start with our hike to the Humantay Lagoon at a height of 4,250 m.s.n.m, our ascent lasts an hour and a half approximately until we reach the Humantay Lagoon. Upon arriving at this beautiful Humantay Lagoon, you will have all the time you need to be able to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us and also fill ourselves with the energy that this mountain of the snowy salkantay has. Here our guide will give us a demonstration of the use of the coca leaf and a small offer to our apus (Mountains) that they allowed us to arrive, which we will participate in. After all this beautiful adventure we will go down to where our bus left us (Soraypampa). Continuing the trip we will head to Mollepata where we will enjoy our lunch and after that we will return to Cusco, arriving at 5:00 pm.

Short version: Humantay was BEAUTIFUL. Absolutely incredible. That was probably the only good thing. TL;DR of the bad: Pick-up was disorganized, they didn’t require the other people to wear masks so the others in my tour didn’t (in an ENCLOSED SPACE). Lack of communication. Long version (going in order of the day) -I was told my pick-up window would be 4:30-4:45 am but I wasn’t picked up until 5:29 am. -I had to message the WhatsApp number associated with the user’s account at 4:55 am so that I could find out what was going on (I was worried that they thought I would be outside and didn’t see me). At 5:00 am, I was told they’d arrive within 6 minutes. At 5:14 am I was told they were on their way. At 5:24 am, they asked if I could go outside. (I initially asked if they could enter the hotel so I’d know it was them and not just a taxi honking the horn outside). They said the driver was outside but he wasn’t yet - he did show up a few minutes later at 5:29 am though. I don’t mind waiting as long as I’m kept in the loop and I’m not sure why the pick up took so long/was late if there was only 3 of us. -The two other passengers were unmasked in the very small enclosed vehicle - it wasn’t a big tourist van, it was a small four door car. The driver didn’t ask them to put on masks, so I had to keep the window on my side wide open so air could circulate. This isn’t a reflection on the tour but worth mentioning I think - I also saw one of them sneeze and cough into their hands, and then touch all the communal items at the lunch buffet without even wiping, sanitizing, or washing their hands. Super gross. Glad I was able to get my food before they touched everything. -The driver wasn’t wearing a proper mask. He seemed really nice but he was wearing a neck gaiter which has been proven to be ineffective against COVID-19. It may not matter as much when we’re outside (I still think it’s important but) but when we’re in a small, enclosed car it’s even more important. To his credit though, he at least wore it. -The guide is different from the driver. Our driver drove us to the parking lot area for Humantay where we then met up with a much larger group and our guide, Jose. Jose also seemed very nice! Unfortunately we weren’t really told much information at the start beyond that we had to start walking (I was going to use a horse because I have asthma). There’s around a 30 minute walk before you get to the horses - not an issue at all, but would’ve been nice to know that rather than just walking without knowing what was going on. -They also give everyone walking sticks which was really helpful, so if you planned to buy or bring some just for Humantay, I’d say they aren’t needed. **Horse rentals are 80 soles btw, and they’ll collect the money at the end when you get off the horse. I’d bring exact change if possible** -Ride up was really gorgeous! You still have to walk about 5 minutes uphill once you get off the horse, but it’s not too bad. All in all, with the beginning and end walk and the horse, it took an hour and a half to get to the lake. -The lack of communication comes into play with how much time we had at the lake as well. From the moment I took my first photo to my last, I’d say we had an hour at the lake. Personally that was enough for me since there’s not much else to do there, but it still seemed weird they didn’t tell us how much time we had? Mostly because our guide called us when it was time to go - what if the people who had walked up only had 10 min because they needed to take breaks on the way up? -There was also no guiding in the traditional sense. Again, Jose seemed REALLY nice but no information was given. No history, no facts, none of that. The description and some reviews make it seem like you get some info about the place but that wasn’t true for my group. -The way down you have to walk - no horses. It’s definitely much easier than going up, but it’s still nothing to laugh at. Go slow to avoid any slipping. I did notice a few workers drive up the path and then drive back with people, so maybe that’s an option for those having trouble. -We were dropped off at our hotels at the end - though that may have been because the group was small. -I’d only recommend this “tour” if you’re looking for cheap transport from Cusco to Humantay and back. It’s a really great price point, and ofc the location itself is gorgeous, but otherwise, I don’t see any positives.

The excursion itself was as expected and the lagoon was beautiful. The only negative part was the pickup, was we’ve waited for an hour (starting 4:30 am in the morning when it is quite cold - it is a long time) with no communication from the host. It turned out that the bus driver had COVID and another arrangement had to be made, which was fine. But unfortunately we did not know what was happening and what to expect. This one part would make a ton of difference in our experience.

Humantay was amazing. The guide was knowledgeable and very helpful through out the hike. He also ensured everyone had as many pictures as they wanted. The experience was so great I recommended it to other travelers I met in Peru.

The Lagoon is totally worth the trip, it is really beautiful, even though a really touristic place obviously. We would describe the hike definitely as medium+, but of course you can rent a horse than the hike is easy. The communication with the host could be improved, we didn‘t feel well informed enough about what is going on. But other than that, was a nice day!

Morning pickup was a little hectic but once we left everything was amazing after that. Erika was great, knowledgeable, and very friendly. She made sure everyone was ok at all times and helped with whatever was needed. The trek up to the mountain was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve had in my life. It was a value you can’t beat and a once in a life time experience.
