Keep Portland Weird Photo Scavenger Hunt

Portland, United States

Experience hosted by Sarah

What you'll do

This is a guided photo scavenger hunt to explore Portland's "weird" and independent sights, most of which are found not in the busy tourist areas, but in the neighborhoods where Portlanders live!

We'll meet at one of these sights, the "Portland Wishing Tree" and walk or ride (if it's raining) through NE Portland. Here are some examples of things we will look for and take photos of:

- weird Halloween decorations (and soon, weird Christmas decorations!)
- colorful people
- urban farm animals (chickens, goats, pigs)
- tree houses
- wishing tree
- independent artwork
- fairy trees & doors
- little free libraries
- political signs
- front yard vegetable gardens
- weird Portlanders
- street murals and art
- dogs on bicycles
- and more!

We will end at at a favorite weird Portland landmark, McMenamins Kennedy School. This historic elementary school was turned into Portland’s most unique hotel with 57 classrooms turned into guest rooms, the Principal's office turned into a bar, and the teacher's lounge converted into a hot tub. Here we will compare photos and have a drink and a snack. It will be a perfectly Portland experience!

Hi, I'm Sarah! I've lived in Portland for 23 years. I love it here, and I hope you'll come explore with me! The expression "KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD" is a reference to our freewheeling freedom of expression, and you'll see plenty of it in this scavenger hunt: art murals, funny fashion, colorful houses, unusual bicycles, and hand made protest signs. This is a city full of interesting and creative sites - you just need to know where to find them! (Hint: the aren't downtown or in the major tourist locations.) Join me and let’s discover the weird! You’ll fill up your camera with cool photos and and meet some locals along the way.

Sarah was very welcoming, knowledgeable and funny! Rony and I had a great time and left wishing we lived in Portland. We left our wishes on the wish tree and went on to explore the neighborhood, which had gorgeous houses and fall colours! We're glad we did this, as we really felt we were seeing people's daily Portland.

Sarah is passionate about her tour and made us feel local. The neighborhood walk gets you to places you would not have gotten to. Worth doing.

Very nice little tour, walking around and taking all the photos possible of as many "weird things" as possible was so much fun!

Sarah's walking tour/scavenger hunt is a must-do on any trip to Portland as it gives travellers a chance to immerse themselves in an authentic, creative neighbourhood with a local as a guide. It really does offer a slice of Portland that you may otherwise not get a chance to experience. Sarah is completely chill and welcoming, and she makes you feel at ease, being completely flexible with the guests she hosts. AND her dog is awesome.
