What we’ll do

Raku is a dramatic and fast way of adding a finish to biscuit-fired ceramics. The ceramic process is generally slow, with lots of drying and firing time in between, so it is difficult to share in a single experience. Raku, on the other hand, is about firing the finished pieces quickly in an outdoor kiln, then dropping them into sawdust (and other materials) to get stunning, but unpredictable…

What else you should know

Like most ceramic work, Raku is temperamental. We cannot guarantee that your piece will not break during the process. We normally have a 90% success rate with firings and we offer you 2 pieces so that at least one should make it home with you. But sadly, we can never offer a guarantee.

What I’ll provide

Apertif, Coffee, Juice, Soft drinks, Tea and Water
We will provide light refreshments (drinks and snacks) and a welcome drink. You should eat a main meal before coming.

What to bring

Wear old clothes or clothes that can be easily washed. The Raku smoke is unavoidable so you will go home with clothes and hair smelling of the acrid smoke. Any specific materials (such as gloves or safety glasses) will be provided.

Where you'll be

Our Raku event takes place in the private courtyard of our rural, french home. There is parking nearby. We will work in the courtyard (it is an outdoor activity but we have options for dealing with bad weather). You will have access to the toilet and washing areas in our house.
