What you'll do

Raku is a dramatic and fast way of adding a finish to biscuit-fired ceramics. The ceramic process is generally slow, with lots of drying and firing time in between, so it is difficult to share in a single experience.

Raku, on the other hand, is about firing the finished pieces quickly in an outdoor kiln, then dropping them into sawdust (and other materials) to get stunning, but unpredictable results, depending on their exposure to oxygen. It is best done at night for more dramatic effect :)

We will convene late afternoon/early evening (dependent on the season) and we will encourage you to relax, and chat whilst you decorate a pre-fired ceramic piece with special Raku glazes. We will supply one small and one larger ceramic piece per person.

We will light the kiln, and stand around watching the flames and the temperature gauge until it hits 1000 degrees. During this time, we will explain the next process as it requires specific actions and some safety notices.

We will (carefully) remove the pieces from the hot kiln, one by one and plunge them into sawdust or straw - and cover them more material.

When the smoke and chaos dies down a little, we will again remove the pieces one by one and plunge them into water. Now everyone can regain their treasured piece and start cleaning it, to discover its finished beauty.

The pieces will be damp but can be taken home on the night.
Other things to note
Like most ceramic work, Raku is temperamental. We cannot guarantee that your piece will not break during the process. We normally have a 90% success rate with firings and we offer you 2 pieces so that at least one should make it home with you. But sadly, we can never offer a guarantee.

We are a couple with a passion for getting our hands dirty and making things! Nik is a qualified ceramicist with a passion for sculpture, he loves learning and working with new materials all the time. Donna is an enthusiastic assistant who loves all crafts and dabbles in stained glass, ceramic decorations and patchwork. We have completely restored our own home in rural France from repairing the Adobe walls to making each and every bathroom tile in our own kiln. We believe the best way to learn is to jump in and experience the materials so our courses are hands-on and fun rather than technical lectures - we want you to have something physical you can take away with you, along with good memories.

My evening of Raku at the Farmhouse was both a convivial and tasty with an awakening to the magic of a glaze. We started gently with an aperitif to open and relax our creative juices. We then painted with seemingly bland white chemicals, in a void, not knowing what it would come. I won't ruin the surprise of the process, but just to say that a little fire, a bit of time, more aperitifs, and the most astonishing transformation took place. It's a wonderful setting for a fascinating experience of art and science! Highly recommend.

With a little knowledge about this exquisite traditional Japanese art, I had put in my trust and time in Donna and Nik's workshop and I think it was one the best decisions I have ever made! Ragu Firing ages back to early 1500's and is so divine, interesting and one of a kind. The end products are so unpredictable. It's like giving birth to a child, you dont know how the baby is gonna look but you will fall in love him/her at the very first sight (except for the fact that most of the labour here is done by very talented Nik :p) 100 % value for money and time. 100% marks on being the perfect hosts, they welcomed me with a beautiful cocktail followed by some delicious home made gourmet snacks. The are very accommodating and speak your language! Could not recommend more!
