What you'll do

Let’s take a walk to the very borderland of Slovenia - a place that separates and joins at the same time. We will meet in Kostanjevica na Krki and drive a few kilometers to the village in Gorjanci hills where we will start our circular walk along the Uskok’s heritage trail. This true off-the beaten track itinerary is designed to let you feel the landscape of troubled past and stunning beauty as it is only known to locals. You will learn about Uskoks, the ancestors of local dwellers, and their crucial role in the early making of Europe. Whether they are portrayed as frontier guards, displaced pirates, smugglers, or adventurers, they are stirring imagination for the last 500 years and their traces are still there for us to grasp. We will follow the mule tracks, strolling through villages, forests and majestic hill formations with spectacular views. There is always something to pick on the way, depending on the season; mushrooms, forest berries or wild herbs. Furthermore, you will hear how locals adapt their daily lives amidst the challenges of the border that persist into the present due to contemporary migration flows. Our journey will end in the heart of the vineyards, with a few glasses of vine and tasty local pastries to honor this beautiful day.

Jana

I am an experienced anthropologist and founder of Terra Vera NGO which allows me to join my passions of migration and oral history research, sustainable tourism, engaged anthropology and fieldwork. After 12 years of living in Kostanjevica na Krki, this hidden gem surrounded by the green Krka river still remains the source of my inspiration, both professional and personal. It simply feels good to absorb the world that surrounds me, whether it is through hiking, canoeing, swimming, gardening, collecting local (hi)stories, or relaxing - Kostanjevica na Krki has it all. I love food from local farms and nature walks with my family in a company of our landseer dog Bar, a true gentle giant. Being a traveller myself, I highly value local experiences and I am happy to share them with fellow travellers from all over the world.
