What you'll do

Imagine as the sun rises over the Tagus and fresh produce is delivered to the market... We enter the space as the smells and aromas of the food and ingredients start to spread across the halls. You get to explore the flavours of Portugal, both familiar and new, whilst spending time with fellow food lovers. Flowers in full bloom on display and fresh fruits and vegetables line the aisles. I will provide some tasty offerings, like local cheese and Portuguese honey, and we might even get to meet some of the market traders. Partake in a tipple of the local liqueur: Ginjinha, or abstain if you prefer and try one of the sour cherries instead, the key ingredient. You can learn what’s in season and fresh for eating like the amazing nectarines, walnuts and plums and how they pair with meat, cheeses and bread. I can give you recipe tips with anecdotes of the local area with its notorious characters and colourful past. This is an experience designed to stay with you way after you return home, you may even be inspired to recreate some of your favourite Portuguese dishes in your own kitchen.. The Portuguese have a saying, “Chamar-lhe um figo” which means 'call it a fig;' and it is used when referring to pleasure. The pleasure of eating or the joy experienced during a special occasion... that’s what we’ll do as we sample the delights of the Portuguese foodie culture!

Your hosts

Originally from the UK, Portugal has been my home since 2017, mainly because of the easy-going lifestyle and the fantastic food culture. With a background working in arts and media, I have travelled the globe producing food features for radio (previously hosting a food show in Dubai). Along the way I met amazing home cooks, farmers and producers of food (and a few internationally renowned chefs too). I will share my insights while we walk, talk and eat our way around the aisles and alleyways of the Mercado da Ribeira and Timeout Market. Join me on my epicurean journey and sample some of the best slices of Portuguese culture...

Where you'll be

We meet at Ginja de Obidos at the Mercado da Ribeira before heading inside to say hello to Margarida and to pick up one of her local cheeses. There’s a pitstop at Croquetaria to sample one of the popular savoury croquettes before heading into the fruit and veg market with a little detour for coffee and a tasting experience of cheese and honey - and some more surprises! We’ll finish at the Time Out Market, which you can enjoy at your own leisure.
