What you'll do

Students will be participating in a one-day crash course on the pottery wheel. We meet at 9 am. Instruction and practice time until 1 pm. Lunch and rest from 1-2:30 pm. We then pick up again and practice until dinner, either cooked by us or in a local restaurant together with staff and other students. Drinks are on me. Students will get two meals a day, materials, apron, etc. I will teach the class with my apprentice David Kwak. He studied ceramics at Alfred University, one of the best ceramic universities in America, and is now studying under me. Due to the nature of the course, it is currently impossible to fire the student's work. It is possible to purchase work from my studio and my store in the old ceramic village.

Learn more about Kyungtae

Kyungtae

My name is Kwak Kyungtae. I've been a working potter for the last 30 years. When I was young, I used to work as a production thrower throughout Korea. Later I graduated with an MFA from Seoul National University of Science and Technology with a thesis on the Onggi technique. I then went on to study the technique under master Lee Kang Hyo and Heo Jin Gyu for several years. After this foundation in larger forms, in 2001, I founded TOROO CERAMICS, a tableware line, alongside my personal signed work. We have a staff of 4-5, a shop, gallery, and studio space in the newly built Ye's Park in Icheon. My specialties are wood firing, buncheong, porcelain, efficient throwing techniques, onggi method, kiln building, and firing, etc. Last year we began a teaching program called Ceramic Masterclass www.ceramicmasterclass.com.
