What you'll do

We will meet up in the evening at Sharks Cove, located near the state Marine Protected Area on the North Shore of Oahu. The educational tour begins with a short presentation about the unique and wondrous marine ecosystems of Hawaii. We will discuss which characteristics of the islands make Hawaii's ecosystems unlike any others in the world. You will be introduced to the organisms and creatures we will be seeing during our tour as well as given a safety briefing outlining possible risks.

At the conclusion of the presentation, you will be provided with underwater lights, reef shoes to protect your feet (optional), and a mask and snorkel to search for endemic invertebrates in the tidal areas of Sharks Cove. Many of these unique creatures can often only be found after dark. We will photograph them, describe them, and discuss each animal we find.

At the conclusion of our time in the tide pools, we will debrief on the beach about what we saw and the significance of each creature. Questions will be answered. You will be provided with photos of the animals as a keepsake to remember.

An outstanding experience! We met up with Don with our 7 and 9 year old daughters. Don had kids sized equipment for both of them which they were excited about. The snorkeling was amazing, we saw a octopus, sea stars, eel, tons of fish, sea cucumbers, etc. Don was able to explain what each of the creatures were, which ones were safe, etc. He was awesome with our kids, snorkeling was in shallow water, but was equally fun for the adult's. Snorkeling at night was a new experience for us and we were blown away at the different creatures you see vs the day-time. A++++

Such a cool experience. Don’s education as a marine biologist made this a super educational experience. His passion for what’s under (and above) the water is very obvious, and he loves to share that with others. I really thought we would maybe see a sea Urchin or two....but we saw SO MUCH activity. The water truly comes to life at night. 10/10 would recommend.

I was nervous because I didn’t know what to expect (first time snorkeling). After the first 10 minutes I felt comfortable because Don was very friendly and welcoming. Very educational but at the same time it was so fun. I would definitely do this again!!!
