What you'll do

Let's discover the mystery of Lisbon in the 18th century: 35 arches, 7 kings, 5 architects... In this tour, you will discover the importance of fresh drinking water for Lisbon and how it was solved in the 18th century - a complex system of tunnels, fountains, cisterns fed by an aqueduct, full of curiosities and mysteries that survived to the big hearthquake! Starting in the Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara, in Bairro Alto, we will guide you through the historic neighborhood of Principe Real with its 18th century palaces and mansions, until we reach the "Water Cathedral", our first visit, an emblematic baroque and neoclassical monument. Along our way we will admire several water fountains. The walking tour continues until we reach the "Aqueduto das Águas Livres", a baroque and neoclassical style massive structure that provided Lisbon with fresh drinking water, built in the middle of the 18th century. The most visible part of this magnificent structure is the 35 arches that cross the entire Alcântara valley.
