What you'll do
During a 4 1/2 hour workshop we will explore various techniques and concepts expanded from drawing. These include traditional and non-traditional materials and ways of thinking around mark-making. This course acts as a bridge, connecting traditional methods with contemporary practice. We start with approximately 1 hour of introduction to traditional drawing and mark-making techniques. We will use charcoal on paper to learn about lines, thickness, light x dark, as well as drawing with blindfold. Following this, we explore for 1 hour unconventional approaches to mark making, including drawing from sound, negative space, imagining the energy of still objects, and drawing using different body parts. After a short break we work individually or in groups on a bigger drawing project that is experimental and challenges the traditional notions of drawing. Participants can choose to pick several subjects or to focus on one. We will have specific guidelines you can follow. We encourage experimentation and boldness. At the end we look at the final works and discuss together the results. There will also be presentation of relevant artists and experimental drawings.
Learn in a group setting from two international artists. Christine Cheung: Canadian artist born and raised in Calgary. Cheung's work involves place, and often plays with emptiness, allowing the viewer a space to imagine and forget/remember in relation to collective and personal memory. Her work has been shown internationally, from Hong Kong to Canada, and her work is part of the permanent collection of the Sørlandet Art Museum in Norway. She has been featured on CBC Radio, The Globe Mail and Kunst magazine. Nina Jørgensen: Visual artist with Danish / Mexican roots. Her work appropriates the natural world as a means to explore ideas around perception, memory, psychology and identity. Her work has been shown in Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Estonia and the UK. She has taught Visual Arts at high school and at the university level.
All drawing materials will be provided.
Where you'll be
