What you'll do
Yamini’s sunny, spiritual nature will instantly make you feel welcome in her home. Whether she’s teaching you the proper way to handle spices or how to create a perfect batch of ghee, you will be inspired by her passion for cooking and her commitment to making everything from scratch. When you arrive, Yamini will serve her homemade chai and a selection of delicious, seasonal Indian treats, which may include her uttapam served with homemade cilantro chutney, and her spiced chickpea cakes made with fresh curry leaves and mustard seeds, and served with fresh pomegranate. Yamini is deeply knowledgeable about cooking from many regions of India, and she will impress you with her encyclopedic knowledge of spices, techniques, tools, recipes, and traditions. During the workshop, Yamini will teach you to make dal dhokli (spiced chickpea and corn flour dough cooked and mixed with lentil dal), aromatic basmati rice, cachumber (cucumber and tomato salad mixed with roasted cumin and lime), and homemade ghee (clarified butter used in many Indian recipes). After cooking, you will dine on the mouth-watering fruits of your labor. At the end of the day you’ll go home newly inspired with all Yamini’s family recipes and a shopping guide to her favorite food markets.

I'm Lisa, founder of the League of Kitchens, a unique culturally immersive culinary experience in NYC. Yamini, the host of our Indian cooking workshops, started cooking with her parents in Mumbai when she was ten years old. She moved to Kew Gardens, Queens with her husband and three daughters in 1999 and worked at a jewelry company for many years. In 2009, she began a catering business, and she now prepares food for non-profit and corporate events around the city. For Yamini, cooking is a way of honoring God, and every meal is an offering. She finds her connection with the elements through her cooking, and she shares her love for life by nourishing others with delicious meals. Yamini’s passion for cooking has been featured by the Late Show with Stephen Colbert (where she cooked with Stephen!), Saveur, MSNBC “Your Business,” and others.

Where you'll be
This workshop will take place in Yamini’s welcoming apartment in Kew Gardens. After the workshop, we highly recommend exploring! Kew Gardens is home to a large community of Jewish refugees who settled here after WWII and immigrant communities from Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, India, and Bangladesh. Make sure you check out Forest Park, a 500-acre green space, and Maple Grove Cemetery, one of the oldest landmarks of this neighborhood.
