What you'll do

Welcome to the Wichita Mountains Photography Class, the first and only photography class authorized by the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Each class/experience begins at the Lake Elmer Thomas parking lot, where guests will receive a brief introduction to the Refuge, along with a short description of the class. We will proceed in separate vehicles to various beautiful, often hidden locations within the Refuge that will have many guests asking themselves "Am I still in Oklahoma?". There will be many interesting and unique photo opportunities with eye opening vistas and always the chance of encountering local wildlife. Periodic Q&A pauses will occur during the class. Classes are approximately 3 hours long and are offered daily. Weekday mornings are highly recommended due to low traffic and cooler temperatures during Summer months.
Note: This experience is intended for beginning/amateur photographers who want to learn about outdoor photography while enjoying the unique beauty of the Wichita Mountains. Please, no advanced amateur/professional photographers or sightseers. Thank you.

Hi! My name is Steve and I have lived in Oklahoma for over 52 years. I'm an avid hiker in the Wichita Wildlife Refuge and have worked in the horticulture field for more than 42 years.

I would like to share my love of the Refuge by guiding guests through several key scenic trails along the many lakes, cliffs, and canyons. I have spent 15 years roaming this beautiful location and therefore have an intimate knowledge of the landscape, wildlife, flora and fauna within the park. I pride myself on my ability to pinpoint and select the most relevant trails to ensure you and your party enjoy the experience at the height of it's beauty based on seasonal factors.

I have a very friendly, easy going personality and enjoy meeting new people, while educating and informing them of the importance of preservation of a truly unique setting .

This adventure is truly worth your time and money if you enjoy getting outside, being active, learning about new places, appreciate a knowledgeable guide, and want to get a few tips to improve your photography skills. If you don’t have a digital camera—don’t let that frighten you away—Steven also had great tips for us cell phone photographers. And really, the photography will just be one part of a fantastic adventure climbing rocky paths, walking sandy paths, crossing small rain-filled creeks, spotting wildflowers, lizards, birds, a waterfall, and bison, elk (if you’re lucky), and longhorn cattle. This 3-hour side trip between OKC and Houston was enjoyable and easy to fit into our morning, and still have time for a lunch w/friends in Dallas before getting to Houston by 8:30 pm or so.

Simply amazing! I booked this as a surprise birthday gift for my financé and we both had such an incredible experience! Steve led us to places we never would have found on our own, was a WEALTH of knowledge on animals and plants, and a fantastic guide. I was astounded by the landscape and the entire area. We got some stunning photos. This was an epic adventure. Highly recommend!

Wonderful experience!! Not only was the instruction very helpful and well presented ~the places he took us hiking were absolutely beautiful!! Places we could have never gone on our own as we are not experienced hikers or photographers! We will go back for this experience again and feel like we have made a friend. Thank you Steven for everything!!!

Steve was helpful and very eager about practicing photography. I could tell he was enthusiastic on teaching more about my camera and how to improve better quality of my photos without using the automated camera settings.
