What you'll do

Michelangelo’s statue of David, as soon as it was completed by the superb florentine artist in 1504, changed in many ways the destiny and direction of western art.
Since the beginning, moved from the sculptor’s workshop to the Piazza della Signoria, it became the new image of the freedom of a generation of new men confident in the future.
In most part, the story of David is the story of the life of Michelangelo and of the city of Florence, and shapes the idea of modern man. The same image of Renaissance (the beauty of the past living in the spirit of the present age) is still alive in the pulse of the marble giant..

Ciao, I'm Marco, and I'm an official tourist guide in Florence since 2011.
I graduated from the local University in art and literature, and I teach art history in different local schools.
Evidently, one of the things I like the most is discovering day after day new secrets hidden in the details of the artworks (and Florence is an unlimited universe made of those).
Another one, is to talk about that with the people that share my same passion.

Where you'll be

We will visit the Galleria dell’Accademia, the institution where the original statue of David was moved in 1873.
Beside of this famous Michelangelo’s masterpiece, we will admire other sculptures that he arranged for the unaccomplished tomb of the pope Julius II in Rome.
Paintings of different ages of the florentine story together with academical models in plaster will made the tour of the museum complete.

I was hesitant to book a tour for the Galleria dell'Accademia, thinking all there is to see would be Michelangelo's David and I may be able to explore this on my own, but Marco's tour is really worth the time and money. Without Marco and his knowledge and story-telling skills, I would not have been aware of the challenging and interesting circumstances that led to the creation of David and probably wouldn't have appreciated seeing the original so much. In addition, Marco made the best use of the Accademia Gallery's collection to illustrate the techniques used by various artists, pointing out who learned from whom and how the artists' personalities and personal lives impacted their art - all in an entertaining way. Highly recommended! If your schedule allows, my advice would be to do this after the Uffizi tour with Marco.

After being introduced to the Renaissance and all the treasures of Uffizi we had a strong need for visiting the Academia to get deeper into the genius of Michelangelo, Italian art history and the Medici family particularly. We were super lucky to get know Marco on the tour to Uffizi and double lucky to be his first guests on the tour to Academia! Marco is an incredible guide with a super deep knowledge of history and with the rare talent to make you create a big picture with all the interconnections between historical events and personalities behind them. Thank you Marco for sharing the value of the Renaissance and its heroes. Hope to see you again!
