What you'll do

Take a vintage camera out into the streets of London, shoot a roll of black-and-white film, develop it by hand using traditional darkroom processes, and take home the negatives! A cellphone camera may be the last word in convenience, but in this workshop we discover the magic of ‘making’ a photograph in the traditional way. We’ll meet in my flat in the Greenwich/Docklands area of East London. I’ll explain how to use a manual film camera (if you’re already familiar, we can skip this part). We’ll load the camera with black-and-white film, and hit the streets. For the next 2 hours or so, I’ll give you an insider tour of the area (see the “Where You’ll Be” section below) while you take photos on film. (Note: Each workshop is limited to 4 guests, and the camera is shared between you.) In the last hour, we’ll come back to my flat and develop the film. I provide all the equipment and chemicals, but it will be very hands-on – I’ll explain how it works, but you’ll do everything yourself. If all goes well – and so far, knock on wood, it always has – we’ll have a beautiful roll of negatives for you to take home: a tangible end-product of your creative endeavours. Note: We'll develop the negatives but we won’t have time to make prints. If you wish, I can advise you on where to get the negatives printed and scanned, or you can leave them with me and I'll send you scans within 24 hours.

Sroyon

Hello, future film photographer and darkroom expert! I'm a PhD student in London, and a photographer in my spare time. I shoot some digital (e.g. weddings and events) but I'm most passionate about film photography and darkroom work. I develop and print film photos at home, using traditional, purely analogue processes. I contribute photos and articles to several film photography websites, and have run film photography and darkroom workshops for the Photography Society of the London School of Economics (my university). We'll do the street photography part of the workshop in the Greenwich/Docklands area, which I know really well. I've lived here for over 9 years, so I can show you not just the famous spots but also the local secrets. Well that's enough about me. I look forward to meeting you soon and hearing about your interests too!

Where you'll be

We start and finish the workshop in my flat in the Greenwich/Docklands area of London. For the street photography part, I'll give you an insider tour of the area. I'm lucky to live in an area with an amazing variety of historic buildings, markets, parks, local pubs, canals and riverside views – all within a 10-15 min walk. We won't have time to visit them all, but I'll try to find out what you're interested in and customise the tour accordingly.
