What you'll do

My tour will take you on a journey through the old town of Edinburgh. I'll share with you historical tales, legends, and some of the more mythical tales of Scotland and Edinburgh. I'll also sing you the odd song as we journey through the streets and graveyards. We'll begin in Princes Street Gardens where you'll hear the history of Wojtek the bear who became soldier, and the story the gardens themselves. We'll enter the graveyard of St Cuthbert's Kirk and I'll introduce some of the darker tales of the city. From there we'll climb up to the castle esplanade to admire the view, pausing for some traditional Scottish tales and legends on the way. From the castle we'll head for the Grassmarket where you'll hear some tales of hangings which took place there. Then we'll head to the haunted Greyfriars kirkyard where you'll hear tales of perhaps the darkest period in Edinburgh's history. From here we'll visit Cowgate, Borthwick Close, the Royal Mile and Tron Kirk. You'll hear histories of families living in cramped conditions, tales of disease and suffering, stories of great fires and the birth of the great Hogmanay gatherings in Edinburgh.

Learn more about Alice

Alice

I'm a professional storyteller with a passion for the myths and legends which tell the tales of Edinburgh's past. It is my job to research and learn about the traditional tales which haunt the street corners of this historic city and I've found the more I learn the more I wish to know. And there is always more to know. I trained as a professional actress and I worked in the theatre for many years. I'm also a qualified teacher of English to speakers of other languages. I'm therefore a very skilled and sensitive communicator and I can easily simplify my language to ensure those who are less confident English users are still able to have an enjoyable experience.
