What you'll do

My tour will take you on a journey into the old town of Edinburgh. I'll share with you historical tales, legends, and mythical tales of Scotland and Edinburgh.
We'll begin in Princes Street Gardens where you'll hear the history of Wojtek the bear who became soldier, and the story the gardens themselves. We'll enter the graveyard of St Cuthbert's Kirk and I'll introduce some of the darker tales of the city. From there we'll follow the winding streets up to the castle esplanade to admire the view, pausing for some traditional Scottish tales and legends on the way. From the castle we'll follow the steps down to the Grassmarket where you'll hear some of its history including tales of the hangings which took place there. We'll walk up the cobbled streets to the haunted Greyfriar's kirkyard where you'll hear the darkest stories of Edinburgh's history as well as some of its lightest, and heart-warming tales. I will tell histories of families living in cramped conditions, tales of disease and suffering, stories of great fires and the birth of the celebrated Hogmanay gatherings in Edinburgh. We will also venture into the world of myth and folktale, where you'll hear tales of the faery folk and stories of hungry dragons. These stories will add a richness to your experience of Edinburgh, as they are the tales which have shaped the city and its people for centuries

I'm a professional storyteller with a passion for the myths and legends which tell tales of Edinburgh's past. It is my job to research and learn about the traditional tales which haunt the street corners of this historic city.
I trained as a professional actress and I worked in the theatre for many years before becoming a solo performance storyteller. I'm also a qualified teacher of English to speakers of other languages, so I find it easy to simplify my language to ensure those who are less confident English users are still able to have an enjoyable experience.

Where you'll be

Each place we'll visit is a location of historic interest in Edinburgh. We'll move from graveyards, through gardens and along old streets, wynds and closes. If the weather is cold we can take a pause to get warm in one of Edinburgh's cosy bars or cafes. There are many opportunities to take photos of the fantastic views along the way.

We absolutely loved Alice's tour. She is a brilliant story-teller and it was funny, surprising, thought-provoking and at times quite moving. I would highly recommend this tour as you will see places you would otherwise miss or walk past without knowing that there is an incredible story to go with that place. Alice truly opened Edinburgh to us through the very Scottish tradition of story-telling. Thank you Alice!
