What you'll do

My tour will take you on a journey into the old town of Edinburgh. I'll share with you historical tales, legends, and mythical tales of Scotland and Edinburgh.
We'll begin in Princes Street Gardens where you'll hear the history of Wojtek the bear who became soldier, and the story the gardens themselves. We'll enter the graveyard of St Cuthbert's Kirk and I'll introduce some of the darker tales of the city. From there we'll follow the winding streets up to the castle esplanade to admire the view, pausing for some traditional Scottish tales and legends on the way. From the castle we'll follow the steps down to the Grassmarket where you'll hear some of its history including tales of the hangings which took place there. We'll walk up the cobbled streets to the haunted Greyfriar's kirkyard.
You'll hear histories of families living in cramped conditions, tales of disease and suffering, stories of great fires and the birth of the celebrated Hogmanay gatherings in Edinburgh. We will also venture into the world of myth and folktale, where you'll hear tales of the faery folk and stories of hungry dragons. These stories will add a richness to your experience of Edinburgh, as they are the tales which have shaped the city and its people for centuries.
Other things to note
Wear appropriate footwear for walking. Check the weather forecast before the tour as Edinburgh can be unpredictable. It's good to be prepared for rain or cold.
We can make a pause in a bar or cafe to warm up if we get cold :)

I'm a professional storyteller with a passion for the myths and legends which tell tales of Edinburgh's past. It is my job to research and learn about the traditional tales which haunt the street corners of this historic city.
I trained as a professional actress and I worked in the theatre for many years before becoming a solo performance storyteller. I'm also a qualified teacher of English to speakers of other languages, so I find it easy to simplify my language to ensure those who are less confident English users are still able to have an enjoyable experience.

Where you'll be

Each place we'll visit is a location of historic interest in Edinburgh. We'll move from graveyards, through gardens and along old streets, wynds and closes. If the weather is cold we can take a pause to get warm in one of Edinburgh's cosy bars or cafes. There are many opportunities to take photos of the fantastic views along the way.

The experience with Alice was as magical as the city Edinburgh. She brought out the children in us, with her wonderfully expressive stories. It’s a great way to introduce yourselves to the city, highly recommended.

The tour was excellent and we found Alice’s storytelling fascinating and thought provoking. Starting in New Town and windy up the hills into Old Town concluding at Greyfriars Kirkyard, the tour blends true history with legends, myths and folklore. It's not a difficult walk for 2 hours with several stops along the way. Would recommend to anyone.

Alice is a natural story teller and has a lovely personality. We enjoyed the walk through the city. We now have a good idea of the city's layout and history . We stopped in different locations to hear a story relevant to the location. Some of the stories were true while others were folktales. Nonetheless, they were all captivating and well told.

We loved everything about the tour. Alice was warm and friendly and kept the four of us (2 adults and 2 children aged 11 and 15) interested and engaged throughout. It was a fantastic mix of historical facts, sightseeing and magical storytelling. Highly recommended!

Booked Alice for a private tour, three Adults and Five Teenagers. I had initially asked her to make it an hour and a half instead of two hours as I didn’t think the kids would handle two hours, but none of us wanted the tour to end!!! Alice is a wonderful story teller and in the narrow lanes off the Royal Mile she really made all the gruesome tales of Edinburgh passed come alive!!! For the rest of our trip the children were scaring each other as we walked home at night, reciting the tales Alice had told them. (Wish they made this much attention at school) Fantastic tour and would roughly recommend. Katie, Chelmsford
