What you'll do
We will meet at Kelenfold train station at 8am. We will travel by a 39-minute speed-train to Szekesfehervar. I will have fresh pastries and drinks for you to enjoy while looking out the train window at the Hungarian countryside while I share stories about my childhood in Fehervar. We will walk 15 minutes from the station to the heart of the city and begin our historical tour. We will see the Basilica where my family members have been married for generations (excluding communist times when church weddings were forbidden). I will show you my "panel" concrete apartment block home built in 1982 and also the new homes after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Our three-course lunch will be at Porto Vino in the cobblestoned historic pedestrian center. After lunch, we visit an apothecary (pharmacy) operational from 1745 and still in its original condition. We see King Matthew wall statue and the Main Street since the 13th century and still vibrant. I show Turkish Bath House ruins from the 150-year Turkish occupation of Hungary. After a relaxing break at Arpad Thermal Baths, we visit Cafe Frei before the most important part of Fehervar: the former coronation and burial area for Hungarian kings and queens for centuries. We then take the train back to Kelenfold, concluding the tour. This is an all-inclusive experience: entrance fees, train tickets, food / drinks are included.

Born and raised in Szekesfehervar, I've been tourguiding in the City of Kings for 10 years. From my Grandparents' tales about 1956 bloody uprisings (pregnant Granny washing bloodstains off her coat after being shot at) to my parents' and my own experiences during communism, I offer a behind the scenes tour of an ever-evolving jewel box town. In addition to historic highlights, we will see my schools, the healthcare system and discuss history interactively. Obsessed with the Hungarian language (one of the most complex worldwide) and the unique culture, I'm proud to share generational secrets about my city, which served as the center of Hungary and the coronation location of kings and queens for centuries. You will leave the tour with a nuanced understanding of Eastern Europe as not just a location, but also a state of mind.

This experience is light-hearted, educational and culturally immersive. I will share a great deal about my life growing up in Communist Hungary. We will walk quite a bit (the historic center is only open to pedestrians), but we will take sitting breaks to discuss the history and culture of Fehervar.
